[4:06] <Bratwurtz> Hi - This isn't a ceph issue as such, but ceph-deploy can't run the prepare because "mkfs.xfs: /dev/sdl1 contains a mounted filesystem" but sdl1 doesn't show in mount on the osd host. And umount just confirms it's not mounted... anyway to force the unount?

[5:48] <Craig> Hey, if I don't have any [osd.X] sections in ceph.conf file, the cluster seems to work normally. Will there be any performance drop if i don't specify these [osd.X] location? something like clients will first retrieve the OSD's locations then connect to OSD. Is it possible to skip the retrieval action?

[11:30] <Mibka> If I create a 3-node setup and install a single SSD in each node. Ceph will be created with size=3, so all data will be on each node. Would it be okay for running a pretty busy MySQL server on that storage?
[11:31] * evelu (~erwan@46.231.131.179) Quit (Ping timeout: 480 seconds)
[11:31] <Mibka> I wonder how reads would be performed. Will ceph always perform reads from the local OSD, since all data is on each server? .. or will it try to read from other nodes, over the 10g connections, increasing latency?
[11:32] <IcePic> "the local osd" ?
[11:32] <peetaur2> local...? it is not recommended to run clients on mon nodes
[11:32] * wjw-freebsd (~wjw@smtp.digiware.nl) has joined #ceph
[11:32] <peetaur2> not kernel clients anyway
[11:33] <Mibka> Well. It will in fact be a proxmox+ceph installation. The MySQL will be inside a VM. The VM's image on the Ceph storage. Inside the VM a pretty busy MySQL server
[11:33] <IcePic> still doesnt answer what you meant by "the local osd"
[11:34] <peetaur2> it answers it well enough for me...
[11:34] <Mibka> Okay. I mean, if the VM is running on node 1 will it do it's reads from the 'local ssd' on node 1 ?
[11:34] <peetaur2> so in this case, the client is in another kernel in qemu(userspace process on one ceph mon+osd node)
[11:35] <IcePic> data will be spread randomly, so there is no locality which you can exploit like that
[11:35] * ggarg (~ggarg@host-82-135-29-34.customer.m-online.net) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[11:35] <peetaur2> and I doubt it will know which host it's running on to choose the local osd or whether it could if it wanted to
[11:35] * ivve (~zed@cust-gw-11.se.zetup.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 480 seconds)
[11:36] <Mibka> okay, so data will be read from node 2 and node 3 too, even while all data is on node 1. Right? And there's no way to force it to try to read from local osd's if possible (in this case always possible :p)
[11:36] <peetaur2> maybe it'll even be faster reading from 3 disks at once, if there are multiple read threads or the blocks are large
[11:37] <IcePic> if you ask for 3 copies, all data will be split into pieces and then copied two times at every write. But you dont get to set where the first piece ends up, only the rule that the two other copies dont end up on the same OSDs
[11:37] <IcePic> so for any data block, the "first" piece which your VM will ask for is going to be local in 33.3% of the cases
[11:38] <Mibka> okay
[11:38] <Mibka> I don't think it'll be a problem if it's going to read from the other nodes too. I was just wondering how it would work
[11:38] <IcePic> and if ceph didnt spread it randomly, you could just never scale to huge sizes, everyone would hammer the first everytime, until it broke, then hammer the second..
[11:39] <Mibka> The nodes will be connected with 10G so should be fast enough for this mysql

[11:42] <peetaur2> so sometimes a single file is split
[11:43] <IcePic> yes, your view of a VM disk or a large file is not necessarily the boundaries on where ceph splits stuff up

[13:36] <jonas1> Hey. Anyone here who might be able to help regarding a question concerning PGs and multiple pools?
[13:43] <peetaur2> just ask

[13:45] * bene2 (~bene@nat-pool-bos-t.redhat.com) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[13:50] <jonas1> The question is basically what the most correct calculation would be in terms of the total number of PGs when dealing with multiple pools. If you hypothetically have 100 osds, and reckon you will have about 100 pgs pr osd and a replica size of 3. That would be around 4096 if one considers the power of two rule right. But would that mean if you have more than one pool, those 4096 PGs would have to
[13:50] <jonas1> distributed among those pools? Or would you have do to some other calculations?
[13:50] <jonas1> Just a bit worried about not having the most correct amount of pgs for the cluster
[13:51] <peetaur2> I think you calculate the pgs per osd combining totals for all pools, replication, and everything

[13:56] <jonas1> Thanks for the feedback
[14:01] <peetaur2> and I think high numbers are bad for memory consumption, and in theory low is bad for performance/even distribution but benchmarks never seem to show it
[14:01] <peetaur2> so my goal is to go lower than the recommended... can always raise it later easily; can't lower it

[18:12] <wes_dillingham> Hi all, l am attempting to create a crush rule with a replication level of 4 and want to place 2 replicas in each datacenter, I was wondering if this rule would accomplish that: https://paste.fedoraproject.org/456252/79775147/ My main concern is with the first step emit phase, once i attempt to select a second datacenter bucket is there a chance that it would choose the same datacenter as it chose in the first step? Thanks (I only have 2 datacenter

[20:28] <bc2946088> When mounting cephfs, and the machine you're mounting it on is also hosts mon/osd, would there be any reason to specify additional mon ips in the mount command through fstab?
[20:30] <T1> that is a _very_ bad idea
[20:30] <rkeene> bc2946088, Well, one case is where the ceph-mon daemon isn't running or runnable
[20:30] <rkeene> T1, Why ?
[20:31] <T1> you could end up in deadlocks where access to a ceph-backed device waits for an "local" OSD/MON operation that waits for IO to the ceph-backed device to complete..
[20:31] <T1> it is NOT recommended
[20:32] <T1> same goes with RBD mounts
[20:32] <rkeene> I/O wouldn't compete since Ceph would only be doing I/O to block devices
[20:32] <rkeene> (ceph-mon, ceph-osd, etc)
[20:32] <bc2946088> Ok, i've removed them and just have the local mon, it boots much faster. I'll check the RBD mount, I believe I have multiples there to.
[20:32] <rkeene> Certainly none of the Ceph daemons should ACCESS the CephFS filesystems, but other than that it's not a problem.
[20:33] <T1> there have been problems in the past
[20:33] <T1> certain IO patterns that causes a livelock that never goes away
[20:34] <rkeene> I'm trying to imagine the case where that's true.

[20:34] <T1> I've never read anything about it beeing a recommended/supported use case scenario
[20:34] <T1> only big big DON'T
[20:34] <T1> s
[20:34] <rkeene> I'd imagine because you might accidentially get the Ceph daemons to touch part of the CephFS filesystem
[20:35] <rkeene> With RBD, if you were to swap on an RBD on a host that has Ceph-MON or Ceph-OSD then that could cause a deadlock, I can see
[20:36] <T1> things can have changed from when I read about it and the common answers were to stay away from it, but I doubt it..
