[5:37] <[arx]> northrup: you don't
[5:37] <northrup> Ohhh...
[5:38] <northrup> So - here's the rub...
[5:38] <northrup> I get this "pg 0.38 is stale+undersized+degraded+peered, acting [6]"
[5:39] <northrup> I run "ceph pg 0.38 query"
[5:39] <northrup> and get "Error ENOENT: i don't have pgid 0.38"
[5:39] <northrup> WTF?!
[5:39] <[arx]> i don't see how that is related to needing the rbd pool or not
[5:39] <northrup> oh - it's not, but pool 0 is he rbd pool
[5:39] <northrup> and if I didn't need it I'd just throw it away
[5:40] <northrup> I don't understand why it thinks the pg resource is stale, but then can't give me details about where it thinks it should be

[8:46] <Be-El> journals will be a problem if you do not want to sacrify LFF slots for them
[8:46] <Be-El> there's only one pcie slots
[8:47] <IcePic> we have a nvme card in there, so we sacrifice network speed
[8:47] <Be-El> i was considering a similar setup, but discarded it due to the missing pcie slot (needed two for nvme and one for network)
[8:48] <Be-El> with a 2,5" drive bay in the back it would be the perfect system for ceph

[8:58] <topro_> hi there, i keep getting incosistent pgs in my metadata pool. the pool has 1024 pgs but its always one of about 10 specific pgs which get inconsistent. i can successfully insruct ceph to repair them but a couple of days the some of them will reappear as inconsistent. ceph jewel here
[8:58] <Be-El> masber: using cephfs or rbd?
[8:59] <masber> cephfs
[9:00] <Be-El> topro_: maybe a failing hard disk on a osd? do all pgs use a common osd and which filesystem do you use on that osd?
[9:00] * mgolub (~Mikolaj@91.245.75.101) has joined #ceph
[9:00] <Be-El> masber: afaik writes in cephfs are already synchronous
[9:00] <swami1> Getting the restarting backfill on osd.9 from (0'0,0'0] MAX to 86296'18975589
[9:01] <topro_> Be-El: would the common osd have to be the primary osd of all those pgs or would it be enough if they all have one single osd in common? can I determine which copy of an pg is the one being incosistent?
[9:01] <topro_> XFS btw
[9:02] <swami1> any reason, why the backfilling restarting on a few OSDs??
[9:02] <Be-El> topro_: i'm not sure about whether it has to be the primary osd. asa far as i understand deep scrubbing, it has to operate on all replicates of a PG, otherwise it would be useless
[9:03] <topro_> seems logical to me
[9:03] <Be-El> topro_: i've asked for the filesystem since xfs does not use data checksums and cannot detect bit rot or other problems
[9:04] <topro_> Be-El: is that good news or bad news? thought XFS was the way to go
[9:04] <Be-El> topro_: xfs is th recommended filesystem, yes
[9:04] * derjohn_mob (~aj@x4db0449a.dyn.telefonica.de) Quit (Ping timeout: 480 seconds)
[9:05] <topro_> so XFS won't detect it, but deep-scrub will, right?
[9:05] <Be-El> topro_: and it's kind of bad news since you have to find out why the pg is reported as inconsistent. data checksums in the filesystem would have lead to i/o errors
[9:05] <Be-El> topro_: yes, by comparing the content of the pgs. if all replicates are affected it won't detect it nonetheless (but that's a completely different story)
[9:06] * mykola (~Mikolaj@91.245.78.8) Quit (Ping timeout: 480 seconds)
[9:06] <Be-El> topro_: and i can only assume that one disk or one host has a problem

[9:07] <topro_> Be-El: thats fine, will help me to get closer to the root cause I think. thank you!
[9:08] <topro_> Be-El: just checked, at least the three PGs which got inconsistent today do have a single OSD in common
[9:09] <Be-El> topro_: maybe checking the logs of the osds with an inconsistent pg will give you the information which osd failed during scrubbing
[9:09] <Be-El> topro_: do you use ecc protected memory in the hosts?

[9:42] <topro_> its a samsung dc ssd (as my metadata is on an ssd pool), got a couple of them, others seem to be fine. even that one doesn't show any s.m.a.r.t. anomalies

[9:48] <walbuci> The others just seem to be stuck in a snap/delete loop

[17:49] <nils_> so I would like to give another server access to a ceph image as a block device. The other server is not connected in any way to the ceph cluster and I'd like for it to remain that way. I thought about just using rbd-nbd and then using nbd server to hand out the resulting block device.
