[1:39] <vanham> Hey TheSov!
[1:39] <vanham> All cool
[1:39] <TheSov> yo
[1:39] <TheSov> i finally got everything to work on jewel, not bluestore, but working
[1:40] <TheSov> im trying to figure out why bluestores arent working
[1:40] <vanham> Cool man! That's the way to go!
[1:40] <TheSov> im hitting dead ends in every corner
[1:40] <vanham> You are doing the manual way now?
[1:40] <TheSov> no that sucks for anything more than 3 osds
[1:40] <vanham> Nah! It doesn't!
[1:40] <TheSov> i just kept changing versions of ceph and ceph-deploy until i found a compatible pair
[1:41] * oms101 (~oms101@p20030057EA00F600C6D987FFFE4339A1.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) has joined #ceph
[1:41] <TheSov> yeah it does

[1:41] * brannmar (~pepzi@06SAACY60.tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net) Quit ()
[1:41] <vanham> I have about 56 OSDs, everything manual
[1:41] <TheSov> yeah that sounds nightmarish to setup
[1:42] <vanham> At least if you know what ceph-deploy is doing
[1:42] <TheSov> people dont use ceph now because they think its too hard
[1:42] <vanham> So if something breaks you will know what it is
[1:42] <TheSov> imagine telling people to do it manually
[1:42] <vanham> What's your use case? RBD, Rados, RadosGW or CephFS?
[1:42] <TheSov> just plain old RBD
[1:43] <TheSov> i have to upgrade our production cluster soon to jewel and im not looking forward to it
[1:43] <vanham> I know what you're saying... If all you need is just a rbd volume, setting up Ceph will seem overkill
[1:44] <vanham> What version are you running right now?
[1:44] <vanham> Hammer?
[1:44] <TheSov> yes
[1:44] <vanham> Don't change the tunables
[1:44] <TheSov> what do you mean?
[1:45] <TheSov> thats in all my setup scripts the first thing it does is tunables
[1:45] <vanham> Set them to hammer before the upgrade (as long as all your kernel clients are at least 4.1)
[1:45] <vanham> If you move to Jewel tunables you will have to upgrade to kernel 4.5 before
[1:46] <TheSov> that may explain why i have some issues with my local test jewel deployment
[1:46] <vanham> dmesg should be complaining about feature bits
[1:46] <TheSov> it did with rbd's and mounting
[1:46] <TheSov> but that was easily solved
[1:47] <TheSov> rbd feature disable imagename deep-flatten fast-diff object-map
[1:47] <TheSov> exclusive-lock
[1:47] <TheSov> u just run that against the RBD images and then it works
[1:47] <darkfader> '
[1:47] <vanham> That's another thing
[1:47] <vanham> Even kernel 4.5 would require that i think
[1:48] <TheSov> whats funny is this cluster is used for our 25 host proxmox cluster
[1:48] <TheSov> so it has to connect to an even older kernel for rbd's
[1:49] <vanham> You should be running on an older tunable then
[1:49] <TheSov> sigh
[1:49] <vanham> http://docs.ceph.com/docs/master/rados/operations/crush-map/#tunables
[1:51] <TheSov> I love that everything in ceph is tuneable like this
[1:51] <TheSov> but on the flipside i can see why people avoid ceph like the plague
[1:52] <TheSov> for RBD's i dont even know which elevator to use for highest efficiency
[1:52] <TheSov> is it NOOP?
[1:53] <TheSov> the last article from ceph is for bobcat

[22:01] <DJVG> Hey all, I want to use quota's with CephFS but this is currently only supported in ceph-fuse but I'm haviung trouble finding if a fuse mount is performance impacting.
[22:02] <DJVG> In my mind is the kernel version really fast but how does it compare with ceph-fuse, is there any data available about that? A quick search doesn't reveal anything
[22:04] <gregsfortytwo> it depends on what you're doing
[22:04] <gregsfortytwo> in general the kernel client will be faster, but how much depends a lot and there are occasional cases where it's slower

[23:32] <infernix> so we've gotten a bit further on our simplemessenger problem
[23:33] <infernix> after the first message from osd A that isn't being received (no "got front ..") on OSD B, every other message seems to get queued on OSD A
[23:34] <infernix> now if we down osd A, the logs for it show .discard_queue and it promptly discards a good 30+ messages
[23:34] <infernix> the first stalled message in the sequence is always an MOSDPGPush for some reason
[23:35] <infernix> are there any logical reasons for osd A to keep queueing message after message when osd B's last log message is "reader wants .."?
[23:35] * georgem (~Adium@24.114.48.24) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[23:35] * derjohn_mob (~aj@x4db1bbe0.dyn.telefonica.de) has joined #ceph
[23:35] <gregsfortytwo> from the description you're providing, it sounds like osd A sent a message into the TCP stack which osd B did not get out of its tcp stack
[23:35] <gregsfortytwo> although it might be looking for it
[23:35] <infernix> for what it's worth, osd B just logs an ".unregister_pipe" when osd A is downed
[23:36] <infernix> yeah, our next option is to drop the ms tcp timeout to 60
[23:36] <gregsfortytwo> if other stuff has been ruled out, it is often a result of the network blocking stuff for some reason: firewalls, too-large MTUs, etc
[23:36] <infernix> but i've parsed 1.5GB of logs
[23:36] <gregsfortytwo> other than that message being blocked, the behaviors you describe are as-expected
[23:37] <infernix> out of 8741 message sequences ("wants .. from dispatch") there are 8740 "got front" messages
[23:38] <infernix> so it goes fine in every single case but the lone MOSDPGPush
[23:38] * khyron (~khyron@201.141.154.178) has joined #ceph
[23:38] <infernix> you'd think that the problem would occur more often if it's a network problem? and not only that, there are 10+ more OSDs on the same two hosts
[23:38] <infernix> this is happening with just one single PG
[23:39] <infernix> i'm at a stage where if ms tcp timeout doesn't work I think I need to add more debug logging to Pipe::read_message
[23:39] <infernix> to see where exactly it gets stuck

[23:41] <infernix> it's funny too that this seems to happen with a specific message size
[23:42] <infernix> reader wants 8390525 from dispatch throttler 8390525/104857600
[23:42] <infernix> it's exactly at that message size (may even be same message content FWIW) where it just gets stuck
[23:43] <infernix> could there be some buffer that isn't able to handle that size?
[23:43] <gregsfortytwo> maybe, but I doubt it
[23:44] <gregsfortytwo> that's just a hair over 8MB, do you have any successful ops of that size?
[23:45] <infernix> let me see

[23:48] <infernix> err 8390317 and 8389593
[23:48] <gregsfortytwo> so, both smaller
[23:49] <infernix> they do seem to complete
[23:49] <infernix> followed by 'got front'
[23:49] <gregsfortytwo> I think you've got something tuned in a way that's not letting enough stuff come through, in whatever weird way (it's not like it actually forces all 8MB in one packet or anything)
[23:50] <infernix> weird. i am already looking at nic logs, maybe some offloading mechanism can't handle the size
[23:50] <infernix> *nic driver changelogs to be precise
[23:50] <infernix> we'll try to get tcpdumps for the event from both sides
[23:50] <gregsfortytwo> but I think the reader will ask for as much as it thinks should be coming, so maybe your tcp stack is failing both to allocate enough space, and to pass back what it can hold
[23:50] <infernix> that should clear things up
[23:50] <gregsfortytwo> you should also be able to change the max osd message size or op size or one of those parameters

[23:53] <infernix> 10?
[23:53] <gregsfortytwo> you'll want to set it to a lower size
[23:53] <infernix> ah 8<<20
[23:53] <gregsfortytwo> yeah
[23:54] <gregsfortytwo> there are several other params defaulting to 8<<20, if this works around the issue you'll want to drop them down as well
[23:54] <gregsfortytwo> osd_recovery_max_chunk, etc
[23:54] <infernix> yeah grepping already
[23:54] <gregsfortytwo> and try to figure out why it's unhappy, because it shouldn't be ;)
[23:55] <infernix> its so weird. 200+ OSDs and only two PGs are having trouble
[23:55] <infernix> but this is great feedback to test, thanks!

[23:56] <infernix> ah osd_copyfrom_max_chunk to
[23:56] <infernix> does it matter if these values differ between OSDs?
[23:58] <gregsfortytwo> well, the one sending the operation constructs it, and the other OSD does as told
[23:58] <gregsfortytwo> so it's the guy sending the push who needs the config changed
[23:58] <gregsfortytwo> but otherwise no, they aren't asserting on sizes or anything that I'm aware of
[23:59] <infernix> ok, we'll set a few osds in a test cluster to 6mb on these and give it a spin
[23:59] <infernix> thanks!
