[9:20] <mistur> hello
[9:21] <mistur> I did some test last week on a s3 storage (infernalis)

[9:21] <mistur> I put big files (up to 25GB) and delete them
[9:21] <mistur> the space is free when you delete the file
[9:22] <mistur> I guess there is a GC
[9:22] <mistur> but how long does it take to free all the space used by deleted object ?
[9:23] <IcePic> clearing a bunch of pointers and markers should go really fast. Not that I know how s3-over-ceph does it in the end, but "un-using" data is usually very quick
[9:25] <mistur> IcePic: it took 1 or 2 hours to start freeing space
[9:27] <IcePic> ah, there seems to be some kind of gc setting
[9:27] <IcePic> google showed me this, http://tracker.ceph.com/issues/10295 Among the comments are hints on commands to run to see how it runs and how to tune the values.
[9:29] <mistur> IcePic: mmh, nice catch, I gonna give a look~

[9:30] <IcePic> there was talk on "max num of objects per run" setting also
[9:30] <mistur> "rgw_gc_max_objs": "32"
[9:30] <IcePic> yes, 25G might use up quite many objs, and hence take a few runs to gc completely.

[9:48] <IcePic> mistur: yeah, and even though the result for the end user is immediately visible (like I started, 'its cheap and fast' ;), there are slower behind-the-scenes processes which makes the ceph admin not experience the same fast-and-cheap behaviour. ;)
[9:48] <IcePic> mistur: then again, we all know noone erases anything anymore, it only grows. 8^D

[11:36] <IcePic> we have a few more hosts, and chose to have N=K+M where N is one less than the number of hosts, just so we can have one box out of the cluster and still not be in a bad mode, but with "only" 8 hosts, I think I would go for 6+2 also

[11:37] <IcePic> and you'd need to have 2 hosts down in order to actually lose data, which seems like a very small risk at 8 hosts.

[12:11] * allaok (~allaok@machine107.orange-labs.com) has left #ceph

[12:18] <IcePic> could it be that the dir on which you mount the ceph disks is owned by root, and therefore mounting on top of it changes the ownership to that of the dir under while mounting?
[12:19] <analbeard> everything under /var/lib/ceph is owned ceph:ceph as the upgrade docs state, and i can start an osd if i change the corresponding journal device's ownership
[12:20] <analbeard> but when the journal device is owned root:disks i get this: filestore(/var/lib/ceph/osd/ceph-4) mount failed to open journal /var/lib/ceph/osd/ceph-4/journal: (13) Permission denied
[12:20] <analbeard> no mounting involved
[12:20] <IcePic> oh, now I get it, you are giving the partition for journals, right?
[12:20] <analbeard> yep

[12:21] <IcePic> nah, just saw the wrong problem.
[12:21] <IcePic> yes, or some other blunt way of chowning at each boot
[12:22] <analbeard> i thought as much - i might as well do it properly and udev it then
[12:22] <analbeard> thanks!
[12:22] <IcePic> mostly, users or user ids should never normally talk to raw devices so I guess that is what it defaults it back all the time
[12:22] <analbeard> yep exactly, makes sense really
[12:22] <IcePic> dont add to the disk group though, that advice seems correct, it will give away far more

[13:58] <IcePic> I looked at the file on github, but the "need" for casting there might just be hiding the fact that the unsigned value perhaps has a strange type, since negative blocksize probably will be rather uncommon
[14:02] <IcePic> not saying you are necessarily wrong, just trying to add that hiding the warning may not be the optimal solution.
[14:02] <atheism> IcePic: indeed, what is your opinion to fix the problem?
[14:03] <IcePic> perhaps its type should be corrected and the cast would be when getting the value instead of when setting it, so that all later usages of it to compate with st.st_blocksize wont require the same casts, if there ever would be more than this instance.

[14:04] <IcePic> but I am no ceph dev, and I am somewhat crappy at C++ also, so dont take my word as gospel, I just know that sometimes, these warnings mean that 'more research is needed', sometimes not.

[14:07] <atheism> IcePic: yes, I planned to corrected it with changing the type of block_size to long. But after some searching in the project and I found some examples that make static casting. Then I come to this simple solution.
[14:07] <analbeard> has anyone managed to successfully use the --gpg-url flag to ceph-deploy? No matter what i try it always looks at download,ceph.com, but this is an airgapped cluster so that won't work
[14:08] <atheism> IcePic: maybe I can wait for more comments :)

[16:54] <analbeard> (under infernalis)
[16:56] <brians> Good Day all - I'm testing with some crazy fast intel consumer ssds
[16:56] <brians> please note testing prior to the word consumer :)
[16:57] <brians> rados bench -p single 10 write is giving me 841.208 MB/s (almost writes speed of the ssd journal)
[16:58] <brians> If I go to replication level of 2 then I'm dropping to less than 300 MB/s
[16:58] <brians> which isn't bad tbh
[16:59] <brians> but roughly the same as using a SATA SSD with a much lower throughput / IOPS etc
[16:59] <brians> am I missing something very obvious ?

[17:38] <IcePic> m0zes: our 40GE cards (Mellanox) takes ages to start. Very nice after that, but they zzz for some 60s per 40G port before going online when the server boots.
[17:38] <Be-El> m0zes: our new 40GB switch just arrived today....
[17:38] <m0zes> IcePic: I use Mellanox 40GbE cards without issue. something slowing down the module loading?
[17:39] <m0zes> Be-El: what switch did you pick up?
[17:39] <IcePic> m0zes: I have no idea what, its just very visible in the dmesg that 60s needs to pass, then first port comes up, then 60s pass again and second port comes up.
[17:39] <m0zes> I've got 5 of these http://www.penguincomputing.com/products/network-switches/arctica-3200xl/
[17:39] <Be-El> m0zes: hp 5930 for ethernet and mellanox 6039(?) for infiniband in the cluster network
[17:40] <IcePic> m0zes: its Hot Lava dual-port 40G cards, using mlx module.
[17:40] <IcePic> "mlx4_core and mlx4_en"
[17:41] <m0zes> maybe something with the custom card desing...
[17:41] <m0zes> they look neat, though
[17:42] <IcePic> they are more or less nosebleedingly fast after that so I'm not complaining.
[17:42] <m0zes> I know you can't fully drive 2 40GbE ports via PCIE3.0x8, but 64GbE aggregate isn't bad
[17:42] <IcePic> nah, but redundancy isnt bad to have either.

[23:36] <mjevans> getup: strange... You should scour the version notes for your current release/future releases after it and see if one of them mentions solving your problem. I recently ended up having to update ceph on my debian cluster to the next LTS since the release I was using wasn't supported anymore and Jessie ships with a previous longer term release.
