[1:06] <TheSov2> i am now doing part 2 of my ceph videos
[1:06] <TheSov2> why is deleting an RBD so intensive?

[1:21] <cathode> does ceph not have background destroy (yet) ?
[1:22] <cathode> that was one of the somewhat-recent features added to zfs. it's a lifesaver. deleting a dataset with 200TB of crap would have taken days. now it's instant and runs in the background

[17:07] <monsted> and even if it only has a dual-core CPU, there'll be people who don't care about speed and just want capacity.
[17:10] <TheSov2> right but I want it to have some speed
[17:11] <monsted> then only populate two of the bays :)
[17:11] <TheSov2> heh
[17:11] <TiCPU|Work> I'm not sure the system you're talking about supports PCIe but consider Infiniband, quite cheap for 20gbit when everything is in the same rack
[17:13] <monsted> there's not much reason to build something as a purist if that makes other uses impossible. i'm pretty sure a half U box with a decent mini-itx board and four disk bays could sell fairly well
[17:13] <TheSov2> TiCPU|Work, eh?
[17:14] <monsted> then you can sell it with either a cheap board with a dual-core CPU in the $100 region or sell a better one with IPMI and such for a bit more
[17:14] <TheSov2> im talking about building a product for mom and pop shops to be able to afford an ala cart type san
[17:15] <TheSov2> I was thinking that for monitors you could use an x86 SBC. for the osd's it gets complex
[17:16] <TiCPU|Work> I read about speed but did not know the use case
[17:17] <TheSov2> TiCPU|Work, I was thinking of building a product for smaller companies that need a ton of storage
[17:17] <TheSov2> but i would also like to be able to say the speed would scale
[17:18] <TheSov2> unfortunately ceph seems to be a go big or go home type of software. if you get 3 systems with 1 drive each inside, you get something slightly slower than 1 disk
[17:19] <TheSov2> you only start moving incremenetally faster after that 3rd drive
[17:19] <TheSov2> using defaults heh
[17:19] <TiCPU|Work> I can confirm with my 6 OSDs on 6 hosts, it was slower than 12 OSDs with a SSD journal each of course

[18:03] <monsted> TheSov2: if you wanted to build single OSD devices - how about a slightly oversize 3.5" disk enclosure with an ARM SBC and a gigE port? :)
[18:04] <TheSov2> monsted 1 gig port would not be ideal
[18:04] <monsted> nothing ever is
[18:04] <nils_> for one SATA disk?
[18:04] <TheSov2> im looking at some reference devices
[18:04] <TheSov2> yes nils_
[18:05] <TheSov2> even a normal spinning disk does more than 120MB per second these days
[18:05] <TheSov2> even if it didnt, you wouldnt want backfill data and request data on the same nic
[18:05] <nils_> yeah, and 2.5/5 GigE isn't really available these days
[18:05] <TheSov2> well i was thinking dual 1gig
[18:07] <nils_> hmm maybe look at the Intel Pentium D (little Xeon D) instead, they offer 10 GigE and throw in 4 disks?
[18:08] <monsted> a 10G switch doesn't match a $100 server well :)
[18:09] <monsted> i think most people who bought a $100 server would be ok with 120 MB/s
[18:10] <nils_> and most mom and pop shops don't really know how to do bonding I suppose
