[0:00] <mfa298> SamYaple: reducing max backfills and max recovery might help if the load is high - not sure if it directly helps memory usage.

[0:02] <mfa298> the other one I've found helps with lots of OSDs is to set noup/noin when turning the nodes on, then when its all been on for a while unset those flags.
[0:03] <mfa298> where we've got lots of OSDs per node it can take a while for all the processes to start which ends up leading to lots of map updates which adds load elsewhere

[12:31] <IcePic> not automatically, but it still needs to do much of the work.
[12:32] <IcePic> neither kvm nor the storage (rbd in this case) can stretch the data and the filesystem, so they just need to make sure the guest can notice growth, then (manually) the guest needs to resize its own partitions and filesystems to accomodate the new size.

[12:44] <IcePic> if you have lvm in the guest I think you can resize it live
[12:44] <MACscr> IcePic: not if the OS is on it
[12:45] <IcePic> I think I have done that on lvm'd linuxes
[12:45] <MACscr> singler: reboot to what? you cant run the resize partition command on the live os afaik. its been awhile
[12:46] <IcePic> lvresize -l+100%FREE /dev/mapper/VolGroup_lvm_root , then resize2fs /dev/mapper/VolGroup_lvm_root
[12:46] <IcePic> for whatever name the / partition got by the installer when running lvm
[12:48] <IcePic> but this might have been when we have unused space on VMs to begin with, not when adding it late. Haven't tested that particular case
[12:48] <MACscr> so do i just use resize2fs rbd:/poolname/volume?
[12:49] <IcePic> against the /dev/-entry
[12:50] <IcePic> but the partition must have grown also, and I dont know how to do that if it isnt in lvm
[12:51] <singler> lvm volume most likely will be in partition, which will need to be resized. you could )if you know what you are doing) use fdisk to resize disk partition, reboot so that OS would detect change and then lvresize if needed and resize2fs/xfsgrow
[12:51] <singler> let's figure out what are you using
[12:51] <MACscr> lvm is 100% not used
[12:51] <singler> what is output of fdisk -l /dev/somedisk
[12:52] <Heebie> I think you have to resize the RBD device within ceph, then handle it at the OS level, as different operations, but it should be doable live. (worked for me in testing.) rbd resize poolname/volume size ?? then inside the OS pvresize /dev/rbd<N> or /dev/vd<x><N>, then lvresize according to how much space to be added to the filesystem, then resize2fs or xfs_growfs etc..
[12:52] <Heebie> (Mine has the caveat that I did NOT partition the RBD, and just used the whole thing as a pv)
[12:52] <MACscr> why would inside the guest have any knowledge of it being rbd?
[12:53] <MACscr> it would jsut be /dev/xvda1 inside the kvm guests
[12:53] <singler> isn't xvda a xen guest?
[12:53] <Heebie> MACscr: You can run ceph client inside of KVM guests, as well as via libvirt

[18:05] <Aeso> I'm working on figuring out the appropriate number of PGs and my use case is a little more complicated than the PG calc can handle. I've got 12 SSD OSDs and 6 OSDs across 3 nodes. I have three pools: Pool 1 is size 3 on just the SSDs, pool 2 is size 3 on just the HDDs, pool 3 is size 3 with 1 on SSD and the other 2 on HDD. Any advice would be great.

[18:12] <Be-El> Aeso: doesn't pgcalc support to define different replication settings for the pools?
[18:13] <DeMiNe0_> I think it does also
[18:15] <DeMiNe0_> It lets you specify the size, number of OSD's and the percentage of data useage you want per pool.
[18:15] <DeMiNe0_> I dono if it's just my browser though, but I can't seem to get the "add pool" button to work.
[18:16] <DeMiNe0_> But if I select one of the use cases, I can just rename the pools and reconfigure them how I want.
[18:16] <DeMiNe0_> And it'll still generate the right commands at the bottom of the site to create your pools with.

[22:08] <DeMiNe0_> When I create an OSD using ceph-deploy, how does it setup the automatic mounting of that OSD to /var/lib/ceph/osd/OSDNAMEHERE? I don't see anything in fstab.
[22:08] <IcePic> DeMiNe0_: check if the "service osd.X start" script mounts it?
