[0:10] * Ceph-Log-Bot (~logstash@185.66.248.215) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[0:13] * Thunderbird (~roderick@100.42.98.197) has joined #ceph
[0:14] <Thunderbird> I have a (test) ceph environment, which I updated using ceph-deploy to infernalis, but having issues getting it operational again
[0:15] * fdmanana (~fdmanana@2001:8a0:6dfd:6d01:dc49:daec:a0a3:2f0f) Quit (Ping timeout: 480 seconds)
[0:15] <Thunderbird> the monitors and osd daemons are running, but ceph doesn't consider all OSDs to be up
[0:16] <mjevans> I'm not an expert in that, but some questions that might help someone else, or your self, help you:
[0:16] <Thunderbird> it claims they are down for some reason, but the logs look fine; even when the osd daemons are down, ceph status / ceph osd commands show 1 osd is up, which makes me not trust the monitor
[0:16] <mjevans> Did you read the release notes clearly and carefully?
[0:16] <mjevans> The upgrades I've done in the past have all been with noout enabled.
[0:17] <mjevans> Have you followed the troubleshooting for OSDs?
[0:17] <Thunderbird> we read the upgrade guides, mostly had to deal with some permission stuff
[0:17] <mjevans> Have you read the logs; including possibly issues with security certificates/tokens?
[0:18] <mjevans> Also, you went from which version to which version (exactly?) and which versions inbetween?
[0:18] <Thunderbird> I upgraded straight from hammer to the current release
[0:18] <Thunderbird> this is all on centos btw
[0:19] <Thunderbird> had some issues at first with the systemd transition for the init files, but the daemons all start and from that perspective are happy
[0:19] <Thunderbird> I'm surprised by the monitor state, I wonder how it gets it data as I said even when the OSDs are down it claims some are up
[0:19] <mjevans> That means nothing to me without looking at the decoder-ring for versions. Hopefully if you collect the above details, maybe in to a pastebin or something for reference, you'll either be helping your self by discovering the issue, or you'll put together enough data for an expert to help you once they're actually here.
[0:20] <mjevans> http://docs.ceph.com/docs/master/rados/troubleshooting/troubleshooting-osd/
[0:20] <Thunderbird> think it was 0.94.2-el7 based on the ceph-deploy log
[0:22] <mjevans> http://ceph.com/community/blog/ It seems there's a new version of 'hammer' released... not sure what infernalis is.
[0:22] <Thunderbird> it is considered 1.0 rc or something
[0:22] <mjevans> http://ceph.com/releases/v9-1-0-infernalis-release-candidate-released/
[0:22] <mjevans> and the update process is NON TRIVIAL
[0:23] <Thunderbird> it didn't look too bad, was mostly the new systemd startup files and permission changes (either needing a ceph user or setuser match path stuff)
[0:24] <mjevans> If you don't have critical data in your test environment, you might, from the sound of these notes, find it easier to nuke it, set it up with your production environment clone again, and attempt a better thought out upgrade path.
[0:24] <mjevans> You did update from the LATEST hammer, 0.94.4 ?
[0:25] <Thunderbird> I think it was from 0.94.2 or 0.94.3, can't easily see
[0:25] <mjevans> Yeah, according to these notes that's unsupported.
[0:25] <Thunderbird> I can nuke the environment, but was trying to understand it better since we are new to ceph
[0:25] <lurbs> 0.94.5 is latest, BTW.
[0:26] <lurbs> 0.94.4 had a fun librbd locking bug.
[0:26] <mjevans> Not according to the blog
[0:26] <mjevans> blog seems to need an update
[0:26] <lurbs> http://docs.ceph.com/docs/master/release-notes/#v0-94-5-hammer
[0:27] * yguang11 (~yguang11@66.228.162.44) has joined #ceph
[0:28] <mjevans> Anyway; I think of ceph as breaking up block storage in to tiny files that correspond to ranges of blocks. It handles mangling and re-combining these block ranges across a number of storage devices. With that you can do very interesting things, like have multiple parallel system rendundancy, mirroring, de-duplication, and converting 'stable' old data to other raid formats for more effecient use of clusters
[0:28] * bitserker (~toni@81.184.9.72.dyn.user.ono.com) has joined #ceph
[0:28] <mjevans> of hardware.

[0:29] * shawniverson_ (~shawniver@192.69.183.61) has joined #ceph
[0:29] <mjevans> If, for some reason, something has gone wrong the first step is; 1) don't panic. 2) figure out what you did. 3) ask someone for help un-doing or otherwise manually recovering from that mistake.
[0:32] <mjevans> lurbs: it might help to clarify; given the issues with 0.94.4, and that there is now a 0.94.5 relese; when the notes for .4 say you must upgrade through this version first, is 0.94.5 also a suitable node in the upgrade chain instead?

[0:44] <lurbs> I suspect so, yes. The diff between 0.94.4 and 0.94.5 is *very* small.

[11:23] * Cue (~Zeis@195-154-231-147.rev.poneytelecom.eu) has joined #ceph
[11:23] <T1w> lately I've seen reccomendations for 2GB ram per 1TB diskspace per 1 OSD
[11:23] <T1w> it's especially needed during recovery
[11:23] <mewald> T1w: I believe I read about something like this once but cant find the resource anymore
[11:24] <mewald> I want to play with Ceph and KVM on the same host. I am probably trying cgroups to guarantee resources to Ceph.
[11:24] <T1w> but you also have to remember not to saturate you IOPS for your MON datadir (if the datadir co-exists on the same disks/ssds as other data where IOPS can be higher than usual)
[11:25] <T1w> if a MON cannot write fast enough (eg due to OSD journals for 5+ disks hammering the poor SSD) to it's datadir it eventually times out and gets dropped from the quorum
[11:26] <mewald> but thats always a risk no matter if KVM guests run on the same host or not, righ?
[11:26] <mewald> +t
[11:27] <T1w> depends on how you configure it
[11:28] <T1w> it's basicly to remember that random iops for machines with MONs on then should never go anywhere near its limit
[11:29] <mewald> ok so splitting out MONs is probably a good idea
[11:29] <mewald> or giving it priority in some way

[14:56] <zviratko> Heebie: you shouldn't run ntpdate with workload, ever
[14:56] <zviratko> Heebie: ntpdate is good for initial sync (on boot, before anything else is running) or when you shut down all services and want to correct the time - one time
[14:57] <Heebie> then how does time stay in-sync between all the servers?
[14:57] <zviratko> Heebie: to keep time in sync you need to run ntpd
[14:57] <zviratko> Heebie: it skews the clock so it will not drift
[14:57] <Heebie> ntpd just runs ntpdate every x often, and adds the service to other things can check the date.
[14:57] <zviratko> nope
[14:57] <zviratko> ntpd is a daemon, it does not run ntpdate

[19:11] <Thunderbird> I'm having some issues with keyring files while deploying a fresh cluster using ceph-deploy using infernalis
[19:11] <Thunderbird> monitor is just set up using ceph-deploy mon create-initial, while osd configuration happens using the ceph-deploy osd / disk commands
[19:12] <Thunderbird> on previous releases the client admin keyring was also copied to the ceph-osd node, but is missing now, so the ceph command on the node doesn't work
[19:12] <Thunderbird> if I use 'ceph-deploy admin {osd-node}' to deploy the keys, the keys are deployed, but I always have permission issues because the monitor client admin key file is different from the one deployed to the OSD node
[19:13] * keeperandy (~textual@50.245.231.209) Quit (Quit: Textual IRC Client: www.textualapp.com)
[19:13] <Thunderbird> the key deployed to the OSD node is the same as I have in my ceph-deploy 'work directory', while the key deployed on the monitor itself is always different almost like ceph-deploy creates a new key
[19:14] <Thunderbird> if I copy the monitor key, I can get things to work, but ultimately end up with other issues with the ceph-osd daemons, so would rather fix this first issue properly
