[0:22] <infernix> when an OSD is set 'out', how can I determine if there is still data being copied off of it?
[0:22] * bandrus (~brian@135.sub-70-211-69.myvzw.com) has joined #ceph
[0:24] <infernix> I tried looking at ceph pg dump osds | grep -A200 ^osdstat | grep "^$osd_id[:blank:]" and check the values for kbused and kbavail
[0:24] <infernix> but as soon as I set it 'out', they are 0
[0:24] * rendar (~I@host91-62-dynamic.247-95-r.retail.telecomitalia.it) Quit ()
[0:24] <infernix> so that seems to be of no use
[0:24] <infernix> yet I know for a fact it is still copying data off since the used space on the drive is shrinking. but going off of how much space is on the disk isn't really a reliable test
[0:25] <infernix> there is literally zero data on this in the add/remove or troubleshooting OSD documentation
[0:25] * segutier (~segutier@sfo-vpn1.shawnlower.net) has joined #ceph
[0:25] <infernix> I would really appreciate any pointers here; "can't be done" would help too
[0:25] <doppelgrau> infernix: ceph -s might help you
[0:26] <infernix> doppelgrau: that doesn't show if a particular OSD is coping data out, just that data is being moved
[0:26] <infernix> i need to programmatically know if data is still being copied off of a specific OSD id
[0:26] <Nats_> infernix, the simple answer is to wait until you are active+clean again
[0:26] <doppelgrau> infernix: if there are no other reasons ...
[0:27] <infernix> unfortunately the simple answer doesn't cut it since I'm trying to automate physical drive management
[0:27] <doppelgrau> infernix: maybee ceph health detail and check every PG if the old osd is in the acting set
[0:27] * erice (~erice@c-76-120-53-165.hsd1.co.comcast.net) has joined #ceph
[0:27] <doppelgrau> (or ceph pg dump)
[0:27] <Nats_> infernix, to get more complicated you would need to use the pg dump, and check that every pg is no longer 'acting' on the osd you removed
[0:29] <infernix> so traverse the PG map and ensure that the osd ID is not assigned anywhere?
[0:29] <Nats_> i think that will do what you want
[0:29] <infernix> for an 'out' osd?
[0:29] <Nats_> since you can generate the equivalent of the ceph -s output, but for an individual osd instead of the entire cluster

[2:06] * Aid3 (4c7f362a@107.161.19.109) has joined #ceph
[2:06] <Aid3> Hi, I am wanting my app to call a DNS server that does round robin. I want to be able to us nsupdate to add or remove ips from a given host when they are dead/cannot receive PUTs/GETs or the proxy is down or some other health script. Is there anything like this already available?
[2:07] * oms101 (~oms101@p20030057EA0A5F00EEF4BBFFFE0F7062.dip0.t-ipconnect.de) has joined #ceph
[2:12] <Kvisle> wouldn't it be a lot easier to pipe the requests through haproxy or varnish or something that handles health checking for you, and can even be configured to try a different host if the request failed?
[2:12] <Aid3> isn't HAproxy inline?
[2:13] <Nats_> that would be my kind of suggestion too, treat it as a load balancing problem
[2:14] <Aid3> What if my app is eventually going to scale to 100GB/s+ ? I can't have my traffic going through one box and many boxes supporting that would be expensive wouldn't it?
[2:15] * Kakeru (~zapu@5NZAAFYJP.tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net) Quit ()
[2:15] * HoboPickle (~nupanick@89.105.194.77) has joined #ceph
[2:17] <lurbs> Yes, but DNS possibly isn't the best place to implement the scale out. Anycast, LVS, or some other load balancer would arguably work more effectively.
[2:20] <Aid3> Alright thanks for the suggestion.. I do understand your reasoning and appreciate it. I guess I need to find something that does non 'inline' load balancing
[2:20] <doppelgrau> Aid3: the most robust and for scale out easiest would be the application using librados directly
[2:21] <doppelgrau> Aid3: if you need to use the s3 gateway more or less all techniques can be used that are used for normal webservers
[2:21] <doppelgrau> Aid3: with all the advantages and disadvantages (e.g. dns = usually slow updates but good scaleout)
[2:22] <Aid3> doppelgrau: I agree 100%, I'm just trying to work out how best to determine which proxies I should be using via custom health checks. I'm trying to decided if I should have the app take care of that or have a mechanism that ALL apps can take advantage of
[2:24] <Aid3> I've been trying to find some pluggable Paxos implementation I can use but am have issues
[2:25] <via> Aid3: i solve this by having the load balancing on te clients
[2:25] <via> so, i run haproxy on every client
[2:25] <via> and it has a list of all the radosgw endpoints
[2:25] <via> each one independently doing health checks
[2:25] * segutier (~segutier@sfo-vpn1.shawnlower.net) has joined #ceph
[2:25] <via> bound to localhost for the client app
[2:26] <via> plus its still decentralized
[2:27] <Aid3> Awesome, that's definitely in the right step. I guess I was missing what people were saying.
[2:27] <Aid3> What sort of checks do you do?
[2:28] * erice (~erice@c-76-120-53-165.hsd1.co.comcast.net) has joined #ceph
[2:28] <via> you want something lightweight, i use the httpcheck built into haproxy, and you can either do end-to-end by checking the existance of something provided for ceph.... or, configure each radosgw endpoint to have a /status endpoint
[2:28] * georgem (~Adium@76-10-168-49.dsl.teksavvy.com) has joined #ceph
[2:28] <mfa298> will RadosGW sensible scale to the 100GB/s+ level. I thought it was limited by the index performance
[2:28] <via> and then the health check will just check if the node is up
[2:29] <via> mfa298: i would imagine the scaling issue is bucket size and operation rate, not throughput
[2:29] <Nats_> via; out of curiosity, why did you go with that solution as opposed to running a radosgw on every 'client' server ?
[2:30] <via> i haven't tried that
[2:30] <via> in other object stores like scality its common for people to run the equivilent of the radosgw endpoint on all the storage nodes
[2:31] <via> that seems like it'd work though
[2:31] <mfa298> I supopse the limitations we've seen may not apply to everyone - we want lots of small files which may nt be best suited for radosgw
[2:31] <Nats_> riffing on doppelgrau's suggestion of 'scale out easiest would be the application using librados directly' (i dont run radosgw at all so dont know the issues you might have)
[2:31] <via> yeah, those all sound like good options
[2:31] <Nats_> perhaps the next best thing would be the app talking to radosgw so it doesnt have to be directly librados aware
[2:32] <Nats_> cool, thanks for your advice
[2:32] <Aid3> I've noticed running the radosgw on every client and every OSD while writing to an EC pool you're going to be CPU bound if your network is fast enough
[2:32] <Nats_> yeah, ceph is a cpu hog for sure
[2:32] <via> Nats_: the only issue is a lot of people need bucket listings
[2:33] <via> if you don't, then yeah. straight rados is def the wya to go
[2:34] <Aid3> via: what would you do if you had 100s of clients? Having HAProxy run on all of them doing all the checks all the time could be slow(er). What about having a few dedicated nodes and have the clients query those nodes?
[2:34] <via> it depends on how you go. if you're just going the simple /status endpoint, and you're only health checking every few seconds... should be fine
[2:34] <via> haproxy's healthchecking is extremely flexible
[2:35] <Aid3> yep it's extremely pluggable which is a plus
[2:35] <via> you could actually completely disable active checking, and it only 'fails' a backend if a connection it needs to proxy fails
[2:35] <via> then you can have active re-checking
[2:35] <via> with a different interval

[2:36] <Aid3> thanks a bunch for a new perspective
[2:36] <via> full disclosure, i love haproxy to death and may be a bit biased
[2:36] <via> but i've been using it in a production environment for a long time with zero issues
[2:38] <Aid3> in a Ceph environment?
[2:38] <via> only in prototypes for ceph
[2:38] <via> but we use it for other things in a setup like i described
[2:38] <via> for authentication systems
[2:39] <Aid3> very cool

[10:05] <sk4nz> Hello everyone. I'm actually compiling ceph from the hammer github branch (0.94.2-1) and creating debian packages with dpkg-buildpackage. Compiling and packaging is ok, but I have a weird dependencies problem : http://pastie.org/private/1mwlendcr7x4ki8y6qf9tq . The ceph packages needs ceph-common >= 0.94.2-2 but I'm compiling 0.94.2-1 ! Any ideas ?

[14:41] <alejandrito> SamYaple, so, if i cant CoW on cinder / nor glance ... why is it that i need RAW from the CEPH pov ? performance ? thin provisioning ?
[14:42] <SamYaple> alejandrito: if you don't CoW anywhere, it isn't required
[14:42] <SamYaple> but you kinda lose any benefit for having ceph

[14:48] <SamYaple> alejandrito: no i think youll be alright in that case with qcow2 files stored in glance since youll be fetching the full file through the api like normally anyway
[14:48] <SamYaple> glance would be abstracting the backing layer at that point
