[1:52] <jwilkins> cmdrk: https://access.redhat.com/beta/documentation/en/red-hat-ceph-storage-123-storage-strategies/chapter-13-pg-count#calculating-pg-count
[1:52] <jwilkins> cmdrk: This actually comes up a lot, because there are cases where people map many pools to the same CRUSH hierarchy.
[1:55] <jwilkins> cmdrk: For example, there are different pools by default for the gateway usage. You can assign them to different CRUSH hierarchies. If you assign them all to the same hierarchy, that means, for each pool, Ceph will create more placement groups and assign them to OSDs. That uses more resources.

[2:21] * Vale (~ahmeni@politkovskaja.torservers.net) has joined #ceph
[2:21] <cmdrk> jwilkins: thanks -- this is basically the same as the ceph.com docs as far as I can tell. are they being phased out in light of the RH docs?
[2:23] <cmdrk> more importantly -- will the docs remain open to those of us without red hat subscriptions? :) i notice one or two links takes me to access.redhat.com and asks for a subscription..
[2:24] * oro (~oro@80-219-254-208.dclient.hispeed.ch) Quit (Ping timeout: 480 seconds)
[2:25] <jwilkins> cmdrk: Red Hat docs have essentially the same information. The storage strategies doc as a whole provides a more cohesive understanding of what CRUSH, PGs and pools are compared to upstream. Red Hat Ceph Storage documentation is freely available. Some of the more advanced docs like performance metrics, etc. are not.

[2:26] <jwilkins> cmdrk: However, it sounds like with a 3-node cluster, you're just kicking the tires right now. Production clusters typically have many more OSDs.
[2:26] <cmdrk> jwilkins: i think you mean carmstrong -- I was responding to his questions

[10:33] <joao> if you recreate all your monitors, you lost all your data
[10:33] <joao> sorry
[10:33] <joao> the monitors keep track of maps
[10:34] <joao> without those maps, it's hard to figure out where data is
[10:34] <joao> there may be a way of circumventing that, but it requires loads of manual work to find the appropriate osdmaps on the osds, and then forcing them into the monitor store in a sane way
[10:36] * TMM (~hp@sams-office-nat.tomtomgroup.com) has joined #ceph

[10:41] <timi> no data could be recoverd
[10:42] <timi> I still have the jurnaling on the osds

[10:55] <schamane> cephiroth, take a look what is keeping it busy with lsof?
[10:55] <Be-El> cephiroth: there's a command to register a pool with cephfs. there's also probably a command to unregister it, but I do not remember their names
[10:56] <cephiroth> the problem is i don't know what's keeping the pool busy
[10:58] <joao> timi, putting monitors on the same node by mistake is quite a big mistake for anything not-a-test-cluster

I tried doing "ceph-deploy --overwrite-conf config push CEPHHOST" but the ceph.conf still consists of the "initial" ceph setup

[22:35] <ianco> Hi, if i was writing a script to help automate removing a server from a ceph cluster just before it is halted
[22:36] <ianco> is it necessary to have the script block and wait after the osd is removed
[22:36] <ianco> until it returns to health
[22:36] * jdillaman (~jdillaman@pool-173-66-110-250.washdc.fios.verizon.net) has joined #ceph
[22:36] <ianco> and then continue with stopping the ods, delting, removing monitor, etc
[22:36] <cmdrk> debian112: create a metadata pool, create a data pool, then 'ceph mds newfs [metadata pool #] [data pool #] --yes-i-really-mean-it" -- but, you know, only if you really mean it :)
[22:37] <ianco> or is it sufficient to take the osd out and continue removing things before it returns to health
[22:37] <debian112> yeah I know what you mean: cmdrk
[22:38] <debian112> I was following this: http://www.sebastien-han.fr/blog/2013/05/13/deploy-a-ceph-mds-server/

[22:44] <cyberhide> debian112, you need to bootstrap the node
[22:45] <cyberhide> the mons will have the bootstrap key in /var/lib/ceph/bootstrap-mds/ceph..keyring (atleast it was for me)
[22:45] * jdillaman (~jdillaman@pool-173-66-110-250.washdc.fios.verizon.net) Quit (Quit: jdillaman)
[22:45] <debian112> cyberhide: it's already there
[22:46] <debian112> ceph auth list show that is active: http://paste.debian.net/172800/
[22:47] <cyberhide> you just copy that down to the mds node, than create the auth for the mds... than touch the /var/lib/ceph/mds/ceph-hostname/done and start it up
[22:47] <debian112> key matches here: /var/lib/ceph/bootstrap-mds/ceph.keyring

[22:48] <cyberhide> you should be able to install the ceph-mds package, just the done file and start it up
[22:49] <cyberhide> oh and touch the upstart file in the same directory if you are using upstart
[22:49] <cyberhide> its basicall just the binary, the key, and the right auth and it will start
[22:49] <cyberhide> assuming you already created your metadata and data pools
[22:50] <debian112> cyberhide: let me check that

[23:26] <Baker> Hello - I have a question around DNS resolution and it's role between Clients, Monitors, and OSD's. If I am reading correctly, the monitors require shortname resolution to the OSD nodes. Does the map that's given to the Ceph clients also include shortname, so the client would have to resolve shortname of the OSD hosts as well?

[23:43] <dmlb2000> Anticimex: I'm working with Karcaw, so do you know how to check the mapping to see if objects got lost?
