[0:16] <Gorazd> Hello, how does CEPH solve the problem in case of network failure between two servers (could also meen server breakdown). Let's say I have two copies of data on server 1 and the third copy on the server 2 with ceph configured to sustain 3-copies of data. Will it immediately start doing the third copy of data on server 1, when server 2 is unreachable (network break-down) or how does this work?
[0:19] <lurbs> An OSD that's unreachable will be marked as 'down'. After a configurable (mon osd down out interval) time period it will then be marked as 'out', and backfilling will start.

[6:12] <Aea> I'm using Ceph to synchronize some files on a FS as a stop-gap for something like S3. I have very little data ~25MB and very very very little activity (except read). How do I reduce Ceph's memory footprint? On some of my servers it's exceeding 750MB. I've been looking through the documentation but hoping somebody could quickly point me to the big settings I need to worry about.

[6:21] <Sysadmin88> i think ceph was designed with slightly larger datasets in mind.
[6:22] <Sysadmin88> are you sure you need something as complex as ceph for 25MB?
[6:23] <Aea> I really don't and I know it's a bad solution. I just have some files that I need to synced between three front-end servers.
[6:24] * aknapp (~aknapp@ip68-99-237-112.ph.ph.cox.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[6:24] <Aea> Using CephFS w/ Ceph to accomplish it.
[6:24] <Sysadmin88> and rsync wont cut it?
[6:24] <Aea> No, because I need changes to propagate very quickly.
[6:24] * aknapp (~aknapp@ip68-99-237-112.ph.ph.cox.net) has joined #ceph
[6:24] <Sysadmin88> BTsync?
[6:25] <Aea> Wasn't aware that even existed.
[6:25] <Sysadmin88> or syncthing, similar things.
[6:25] <Sysadmin88> or RSYNC set to do it's thing at very short intervals?
[6:26] <Aea> I'm a dev not a sysadmin, but doesn't rsync have a problem determining the source of a change? i.e. I have three front-ends that this data can live on, writes can happen on any one. I need the "canonical" change to propagate.
[6:26] <Aea> And by determining I mean not designed for this use case?
[6:27] * aknapp (~aknapp@ip68-99-237-112.ph.ph.cox.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[6:27] <Aea> Ended up setting mds mem max = 131072 and kicking an offending monitor in the head with a kill -9 (strangely the init.d command wouldn't work) and now memory usage is reasonable again.

[12:34] <Kioob> Hi
[12:34] <Kioob> I have a ?? ceph-osd -i 31 --flush-journal ?? which runs since hours, and I still see IO activity on the block device. Is there a way to see what's happening ?
[12:44] <branto> Kioob: /var/log/ceph/ceph.log (or some other file in the directory) might give you an idea
[12:47] <Kioob> the flush-journal doesn't seem to populate logs

[13:02] <branto> Kioob: well, then you might try looking at the open fds for the ceph-osd process
[13:02] <branto> that is stg like 'ls -l /proc/$(pidof ceph-osd)/fd/'
[13:02] * Nacer (~Nacer@252-87-190-213.intermediasud.com) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[13:03] <Kioob> yep
[13:03] <Kioob> I see a "/var/log/ceph/ceph-osd.31.log.1 (deleted)"...
[13:03] <branto> you can still access it through the /proc though
[13:03] <Kioob> /var/lib/ceph/osd/ceph-31/current/omap/064847.sst
[13:04] <Kioob> mm. I can access opened files via /proc/ ?

[13:04] <Kioob> I didn't know that, I'm searching, thanks
[13:05] <branto> you can use the /proc/<pid>/fd/<some_num>
[13:05] <branto> the fd shows the list of opened file descriptors for the process
[13:05] <Kioob> it's just a link to the real file
[13:06] <branto> I'm pretty sure I can access these files via proc

[13:08] <Kioob> great :)
[13:09] <Kioob> thanks a lot branto !

[16:50] <devicenull> hmm, I have an OSD that keeps dieing with 'hit suicide timeout'
[16:51] <devicenull> what could cause that?
[16:51] <linuxkidd> There should be some messages before that which point to the cause
[16:51] <linuxkidd> or possibly more context on the 'hit suicide timeout' line..

[16:52] <devicenull> is what I see otherwise, I dont see anything else in particular
[16:53] <linuxkidd> is it only one OSD, or multiple? if multiple... are they all in one node, or multiple nodes?

[16:54] <devicenull> 0.80.4, only one OSD
[16:54] <devicenull> as far as I can tell, connectivity to the other nodes is fine
[16:54] <linuxkidd> I'd take a look at that OSD's workload, and/or possibly errors on that disk (from syslog/messages/dmesg, etc)
[16:55] <linuxkidd> if it was doing a scrub, had other logs of slow response from that OSD, etc...
[16:55] <devicenull> ah, could be disk issues?
[16:55] <devicenull> I thought it was related to the network
[16:55] <devicenull> actually looking at it, this machine had some xfs corruption a few days ago, so a bad disk seems likely
[16:55] <linuxkidd> well... if no other disks experience it.. even ones on the same OSD node.. then the network is likely OK

[21:05] <lincolnb> this is a single mds running on a node running mon/mds/osds as well. maybe migrating the mds to a dedicated server would help?

[21:59] <wabat> Hi all...I have a bit of a problem. I have an all-SSD ceph cluster setup with 6 OSD nodes and 3 monitor nodes (adding 2 more shortly). We've run various performance tests and we keep getting the same poor results. At the OS level we can run a dd against a drive and get roughly 450-500MB/s throughput. When we run a ceph tell against the OSD associated with the same drive we only get about 60MB/s throughput. This happens on both Dumpling and Firefly. We'
