[8:52] <sekas> also, i am connected via my phone as we dont allow 6667 towards internet.
[8:53] <zhyan_> I guess the number of lost osd is larger than replica count
[8:53] <sekas> i removed a bunch of drives to replace with ssd's for journal, so i rather just cut my data losses (virtually none as we have no data on it) than going back to the datacenter..
[8:54] <zhyan_> you can delete pools
[8:54] <sekas> yes, and as i said, i can lose it all but dont want to have to redeploy the whole cluster if i dont have to..
[8:55] <sekas> i have deleted the pools which the pgs were refering to..
[8:57] <sekas> but still stuck stale.

[11:42] <sekon> Suppose i am trying to store a 5 GB object in a 2 GB OSD store, what is going to happen
[11:42] <sekon> Will it be split up into pieces and stored in sperate OSD's ?
[11:43] <sekon> in other words ceph speaks of parallelization of IO .. at what level is the parallelization implemented ?
[11:44] <brother> sekon: If you use librados you will need to do the striping and parallelization yourself.
[11:46] <brother> sekon: But if you use radosgw it will stripe the object onto multiple OSD's for you automatically.

[13:10] <sekas> yo guys! sorted out my issues with the stale pgs. thanks for your help earlier. i have one more question.. using ceph-deploy to create a cluster i end up with a tiny ceph.conf which doesnt cntain any information about osds/journals. where is this stored nowdays? is that config split up in 72.2?

[13:20] <andreask> sekas: a mixture of udev rules and upstart scripts brings the osds up, the journal for an osd is a link in the osd data-dir to the correct device/file
[13:21] <singler> ccooke: I'd guess one mon, one osd
[13:21] <ccooke> hmm. The default config doesn't seem to like running with one osd

[13:29] <ccooke> when, out of curiosity, I started a cluster with only one ods it never marked the pgs active
[13:29] <sekas> andreask thanks, so having this info in ceph.conf is just legacy and would not change anything? reason i am asking is that i liked having it all in one place..
[13:30] <ccooke> andreask: I'm not sure I understand what you think I'm talking about, sorry. I'm trying to work out the absolute minimal set of ceph that can be used
[13:30] <ccooke> hence creating a cluster and only adding one osd to it, to see how it coped
[13:30] <andreask> ccooke: you need to change the min_size for your pools to 1
[13:30] <ccooke> ah ha!
[13:30] <ccooke> I missed that
[13:31] <ccooke> thank you

[13:32] * ccooke is setting up a standard server build he can replicate, but in order for the services to work well each server must be able to come up on its own, without any VMs running.
[13:33] <ccooke> It can then start the ceph cluster, access its own VMs on that cluster and bring up some VMs for additional mons, and mds, and finally a local nfs server.

[15:34] <Kioob`Taff> So, to remove a whole (rbd) pool, how to proced to reduce I/O ? (should I manually remove files/object on each OSD ?)

[15:35] <Kioob`Taff> Or can I safelly remove the pool, and Ceph will properly and smoothly removing objects ?
[15:35] <joao> I have to finish adding descriptions to the meetup
[15:36] <joao> and here I was thinking I had written everything already
[15:37] <joao> Kioob`Taff, ceph will gradually remove the pgs after you delete a pool

[15:38] <joao> if by manually removing files on the OSDs you mean actually going into the osd data dir and manually removing stuff, that's a really bad idea
[15:39] * finster (~finster@cmdline.guru) has joined #ceph
[15:40] <Kioob`Taff> Yes I was thinking it's a bad idea, but I can't have hours of shutdown, just like when I remove snapshot of big RBD images...

[15:41] <joao> my guess is that manually removing files to avoid "hours of shutdown" is likely to instead cause complete havoc and potential data loss

[20:58] <bens> I already did it.
[20:58] <joshd> faith: the id is a unique id derived from the monitors when the client authenticates and connects. usually people use rbd lock list (or the python librbd bindings) to get the locker id in order to remove a lock
[20:58] <bens> cube - those docs show that they should go away after some time

[21:11] <lurbs> joshd: I was looking at trialing OpenStack ephemeral storage on RBD, in havana. Is there a relatively small set of commits in your havana-ephemeral-rbd that could be picked out, or is it a case of having to use the branch wholesale?
[21:12] <nhm> bens: Something you can also do short of digging through millions of lines of debug = 20 logs is look at dump_historic_ops right after the rados bench test. That will give you a history of the slowest ops on each OSD and where (approxiately) in the OSD they were slow.
[21:12] <bens> working on that now
[21:12] <nhm> bens: something like this:
