[10:36] <ben__> hi everyone
[10:36] <ben__> I'm having some issues with ceph after a disk failed
[10:37] <ben__> basically, I removed it from the crushmap, and did a ceph osd rm
[10:37] <ben__> but I didn't mark it as out beforehand
[10:37] <ben__> and now some pgs are stuck stale
[10:37] <ben__> because their primary osd (22) is unavailable
[10:38] <ben__> does anyone know how I can recover from this situation?
[10:38] <ben__> it seems like I should be able to tell those pgs that their primary osd is not osd.22 anymore
[10:38] <ben__> but whichever one is left in the cluster
[10:39] * alexm_ (~alexm@83.167.43.235) has joined #ceph
[10:39] <andreask> the osd was not out before you removed it?
[10:39] <ben__> no
[10:40] <ben__> I missed the step where you're supposed to do ceph osd out
[10:40] <andreask> and now it gives you an error?
[10:41] <ben__> yes, now I have "health HEALTH_WARN 85 pgs stale; 85 pgs stuck stale"
[10:41] <andreask> you can mark the osd lost
[10:42] <ben__> that will force the pgs to replicate the data to other osds?
[10:43] <ben__> the command tells me I might lose data, but that's only if I had replication set to 1, right?
[10:43] <andreask> cluster will try its best, but there is no guarantee the pgs/objects on the copies are up2date
[10:44] <andreask> well ... replication "1" is in fact no replication ...
[10:44] <ben__> sure :)
[10:44] <ben__> I'll give it a try then...
[10:44] * zerick (~eocrospom@190.187.21.53) Quit (Ping timeout: 480 seconds)
[10:45] <ben__> well, it tells me "osd.22 is not down or doesn't exist"
[10:46] <andreask> only use the id not the complete name ... so 22 in your case
[10:47] <ben__> that's what I did
[10:47] <ben__> the exact command was "ceph osd lost 22 --yes-i-really-mean-it"
[10:47] <andreask> hmm .. oh, you removed it before ...

[10:52] <andreask> well, you can try doing an osd create with that id ... never tried
[10:52] <ben__> I'm not sure what you mean with ""ceph pg X query"
[10:52] <ben__> should "query" be some pg command?
[10:52] <andreask> you can get more details about such a stuck pg
[10:52] <andreask> yes
[10:54] <ben__> well, I tried "ceph pg map 12.738" (where 12.738 is the id of a stuck pg), and it only tells me "osdmap e2954 pg 12.738 (12.738) -> up [12] acting [12]"

[19:58] * xarses (~andreww@12.164.168.117) has joined #ceph
[19:59] <nhm> mikedawson: ah, that's what I was wondering (lots of small writes)
[19:59] * garphy is now known as garphy`aw
[20:00] <nhm> Ok, so there's a lot of threads that end up touching an op as it works it's way through the OSD. I think Sam said at least 7.
[20:00] <nhm> We're actually working on reducing that somewhat now.
[20:01] * Pedras (~Adium@216.207.42.132) has joined #ceph
[20:02] <nhm> You might be able to tweak the behavior by pinning ceph-osd processes to specific cores and adjusting the various thread count tunables so that the number of total threads is closer to the number of cores you have in the box.
[20:04] <mikedawson> nhm: first off, do you think the context switching penalty is an issue (in terms of latency or otherwise) at that level?

[20:05] <nhm> how many IOPs are you seeing?
[20:06] <mikedawson> ~750 writes/sec across the cluster of 72 osds with 3x replication
[20:06] <nhm> mikedawson: Ok, not great. :/
[20:07] <nhm> mikedawson: well, are these all small writes?
[20:07] <nhm> or a mixed workload?
[20:07] <mikedawson> nhm: that's steady-state production workload. in benchmarking, it will go higher
[20:07] <nhm> ah, ok
[20:07] <mikedawson> nhm: but it falls on its face when deep-scrub starts (or backfill/rebalancing)
[20:08] <nhm> So I sometimes wonder if context switching hurts us a little on spinning disks, but Sam doesn't really think so afaik. It's definitely a bigger issue with SSDs.
[20:08] <nhm> mikedawson: you might want to lower recovery op priority and max backfills
[20:08] <mikedawson> nhm: yes, all small writes averaging about ~16KB

[20:12] <nhm> mikedawson: yes, under certain circumstances that depend on the number of PGs, number of OSDs, the RBD block size, etc.
[20:12] <nhm> it's less of an issue than with RGW and lots of tiny objects.
[20:13] <nhm> http://ceph.com/docs/master/rados/configuration/filestore-config-ref/

[20:16] <mikedawson> nhm: I have the defaults of 10 and 2 respectively. If you were going to try to tune those settings which direction would you go?
[20:17] <mikedawson> nhm: rbd is set to the default size of 4MB, perhaps that's an issue, too
[20:18] <nhm> mikedawson: So basically the larger you make them, the less splitting, but the more expensive directory lookups are (maybe for backfill, etc).
[20:19] <nhm> fewer splits are theoretically nice because you have fewer dentries to search for. They should cache though, but for whatever reason it seems to hurt more than it maybe should.
[20:19] <mikedawson> nhm: Is the idea that with a heavy write workload, splitting basically starts to look like write amplification?
[20:21] <nhm> that's part of it, but it should only last for a while and then performance should more or less recover, but it's not clear that it is happening so cleanly.
[20:22] <nhm> There will be some random variation as some PGs will fill up with objects a bit faster/slower than others, but we see some effects that seem to indicate that it might be more complicated than just that.
[20:22] <mikedawson> nhm: another twist to throw in here... these are actually not writes to unallocated space, but rather updates overwriting previous data. It is video surveillance...drive fills up, then constantly discards oldest data to write new data.

[20:25] <nhm> mikedawson: as far as XFS goes, I haven't really looked into object fragmentation in a while.
[20:25] <nhm> mikedawson: ah, that's what I was wondering.

[20:27] <mikedawson> yuriw: scrub will not fix inconsistent placement groups, you need to manually repair them. I think it is something like "ceph pg repair 3.136"
[20:29] <yuriw> mikedawson: I don't know what scrub is, so will try your line, what 3.136 mean?
[20:30] <mikedawson> nhm: I have been able to defrag xfs online while ceph is running. It yielded to client io nicely. Took almost 24 hours. Didn't really see much benefit in a single osd test
[20:30] <mikedawson> yuriw: "ceph pg repair <placement group id>"
[20:30] <nhm> mikedawson: might not matter if you are just doing tons of 16kb overwrites
[20:30] <nhm> mikedawson: might see a nice boost for large sequential reads though.
[20:31] <dmick> yuriw: scrub is a periodic consistency check to see if objects and their replicas are consistent
[20:31] <mikedawson> nhm: yeah, reads were my issue when I was trying
[20:31] <dmick> two kinds: scrub checks metadata, deep-scrub checks data
[20:31] <yuriw> mikedawson: and how do I find that <placement group id>?
[20:32] <dmick> but scrub doesn't fix anything. there's two flavors of repair, pg and osd
[20:32] <yuriw> is it cluster da9195f0-02ea-40b3-accb-d9b6c0878e17?
[20:32] <dmick> pg does the pg, osd does (I think) all pgs for which the osd is primary
[20:32] <mikedawson> yuriw: ceph health detail likely will show the offending placement groups
[20:33] <yuriw> mikedawson: it shows "HEALTH_ERR 48 pgs inconsistent; 48 scrub errors"
[20:34] <yuriw> and ceph -s shows:
[20:34] <yuriw> cluster da9195f0-02ea-40b3-accb-d9b6c0878e17
[20:34] <yuriw> health HEALTH_ERR 48 pgs inconsistent; 48 scrub errors

[20:34] <mikedawson> yuriw: is that the output of 'ceph health' or 'ceph health detail'? 'ceph health detail' is more verbose
[20:34] <yuriw> pgmap v5948: 272 pgs, 13 pools, 205 kB data, 2075 objects
[20:34] <yuriw> 42595 MB used, 1668 GB / 1802 GB avail
[20:34] <yuriw> 224 active+clean
[20:34] <yuriw> 48 active+clean+inconsistent
[20:36] <yuriw> mikedawson: I see, it shows lots, see here http://ur1.ca/gk1lu, and what is the id?
[20:37] <dmick> what is what id?
[20:37] <yuriw> it looks like <placement group id> is someting like pg 9.5 , yes?
[20:37] <mikedawson> yuriw: in that paste, the third line refers to placement group 9.5
[20:38] <mikedawson> yuriw: so 'ceph pg repair 9.5'
[20:38] <yuriw> got it! so I have to run ceph pg repair for all of them?
[20:38] <dmick> yes, "id" is the number that identifies the pg
[20:38] <dmick> it looks like you have disk errors
[20:38] <mikedawson> or like dmick said, you can repair based on an osd like 'ceph osd repair 0' and 'ceph osd repair 1' for osd.0 and osd.1

[22:15] <alphe> yuriw from my experience don t reconstruct your dead drive it takes a lot of time a lot of memory
[22:16] <alphe> first try a repair
[22:16] <alphe> it is less agressive for your ceph cluster
[22:17] <alphe> then if the disk is really dead or if alot of data is missing from the hard drive in fault then you have no other choice than removing from osdmap osdcrushmap authmap your faulty osd related to your faulty disk then recreate it and let the ceph magic operate alone
[22:18] <alphe> but this will have a heavy impact on the node hosting the faulty osd

[23:02] <alexanders> It basically just times out, and then I have to manually delete /var/lib/dpkg/lock from my server.
