[1:06] <malcolm> Morning all, need a quick pointer in the right direction. I'm using cephfs and when writing multiple streams from a single host it looks like all the streams are picking the same OSD as the primary (there are 10 nodes running as OSD's so in theory lots of bnandwidth is possible)
[1:06] <malcolm> Which tunable have I missed or incorrectly configured.
[1:12] * doxavore (~doug@99-7-52-88.lightspeed.rcsntx.sbcglobal.net) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[1:12] * dxd828 (~dxd828@host-2-97-72-213.as13285.net) Quit (Quit: Computer has gone to sleep.)
[1:12] * sarob (~sarob@CMU-881111.WV.CC.CMU.EDU) has joined #ceph
[1:15] <gregsfortytwo1> malcolm: how are you writing the streams? what's the output of ceph -s?
[1:20] <malcolm> gregsfortytwo1: I'm just doing dirty dd's with a bs=1M. A single stream nets about 45MB/s which is what I would expect, but 10 streams nets 4.5 each. So it feels like they are all landing on the same primary OSD
[1:21] <malcolm> It's all sitting on FDR IB so network is not the bottle neck
[1:21] <gregsfortytwo1> well, check out the disk activity on the nodes then
[1:21] <malcolm> ceph -s gives a health_ok
[1:21] <gregsfortytwo1> what's the full output?
[1:21] <malcolm> Ahhh you want it pasted here?
[1:21] <gregsfortytwo1> pastebin ;)
[1:22] <malcolm> K gimme a second.
[1:23] <cjh_> ceph: i removed my monitor b from my cluster with the manual steps and i can't seem to add it again. i"m getting: 2013-10-24 19:21:46.890704 7fa1377fe700 0 monclient: hunting for new mon
[1:23] <cjh_> Error EEXIST: mon b 192.168.1.21:6789/0 already exists
[1:23] <malcolm> gregsfortytwo1: http://pastebin.com/n99kYWeM
[1:24] <malcolm> It acutally says warn.. but its due to low / space on n001.. its a 4TB disk... 6% is not a small number..
[1:24] <malcolm> and that is not the OSD disk.. that is the / disk
[1:24] <joao> cjh_, how did you remove it?
[1:25] <cjh_> ceph mon remove b
[1:25] <cjh_> then i did an rm -rf on the mon directory
[1:25] <cjh_> i then started over with the add monitor commands on the wiki
[1:26] <joao> can you please run 'ceph mon getmap -o /tmp/foo && monmaptool --print /tmp/foo' and pastebin the result?
[1:26] <cjh_> oddly enough it throws this on restart: failed: 'ulimit -n 32768; /usr/bin/ceph-mon -i b --pid-file /var/run/ceph/mon.b.pid -c /etc/ceph/ceph.conf ' but it says i have a running monitor and ceph -s says i have 3 mons again
[1:26] <cjh_> sure
[1:26] <joao> ah
[1:26] <joao> wait
[1:26] <cjh_> http://fpaste.org/49380/13826572/
[1:26] <cjh_> i can't explain it but it's there now
[1:27] <gregsfortytwo1> malcolm: this is probably not the problem that you're seeing, but you need more PGs with 10 OSDs ?????more like 100 each

[1:28] * ScOut3R (~scout3r@BC24BF84.dsl.pool.telekom.hu) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[1:28] <malcolm> gregsfortytwo1: Ahh yeah, I haven't adjusted that yet.
[1:28] <joao> cjh_, can you please increase debug on whatever mon is the leader to 'debug mon = 20', rerun 'ceph mon remove b', check if the mon is still on the map and, if so, pastebin the leader's log?
[1:28] <joao> actually, drop the log somewhere
[1:29] * ScOut3R (~scout3r@BC24BF84.dsl.pool.telekom.hu) has joined #ceph
[1:29] <cjh_> sure
[1:29] <cjh_> 1 sec
[1:29] <gregsfortytwo1> malcom: what's the output of "ceph osd tree"?
[1:29] <gregsfortytwo1> you should really make sure that each OSD is getting traffic, and that your network is behaving as you think
[1:31] <gpmidi> Question (unrelated to my previous as-yet unresolved issue): I have a site that needs to store tens of millions of images. (No, it's not porn) The images vary in size and wheither they count as small, medium or large depends on your perspective. Off hand I think they're in the 10KiB to 300KiB range for the most part. The images will need to be accessed in pysudu random order. Although batching 10-50 images into a bundle and then randomly picking bundles
[1:31] <gpmidi> What are the advantages/disadvantages I should consider with the following posibilities and is there anything obvious that I'd want to consider too?
[1:31] <gpmidi> A) Use tar or simlar format to bundle 20 or so images into a tarball that is stored as a ceph object. When a bundle of images is needed it would be downloaded from the four Ceph OSDs and the images from the tarball would be cached using memcached such that the images can be requested indpendantly by the remote browser.
[1:31] <gpmidi> B) Use a single (or perhaps multiple) Ceph file systems with the images stored as regular files on the FS.
[1:31] <gpmidi> C) Store each image in its own Ceph object.
[1:32] <malcolm> gregsfortytwo1: i just did a "ceph pg dump" and I can see that all the pgs are [0,x]
[1:33] <cjh_> joao: removing the monitor works as expected. it says there are 2 mons now

[1:34] <joao> cool, good to know
[1:34] * sarob (~sarob@CMU-881111.WV.CC.CMU.EDU) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[1:34] <cjh_> joao: i think i'm good
[1:35] <cjh_> i think it's bitching because my mon.b was in the ceph.conf file
[1:35] <cjh_> that's gotta be it
[1:35] <cjh_> cause everything else works
[1:35] <gregsfortytwo1> malcolm: sounds like your crush rules are incorrect, then, or else your topology is set up weird
[1:35] <malcolm> gregsfortytwo1: infact they are all looking like this "osdmap e96 pg 2.1a (2.1a) -> up [0,2] acting [0,2]" (with the 2 being different numbers each time.)
[1:36] <malcolm> gregsfortytwo1: crush map is the ootb one.. I might kick it now and see what happens.
[1:37] <gregsfortytwo1> malcolm: if you look at "ceph osd tree" it may help; I suspect your map isn't set up correctly
[1:37] <malcolm> gregsfortytwo1: I've got zero weights... I've seen this before... Thanks for your help.. I know what to do from here.. (feels stupid :D)

[15:34] <mozg> Psi-Jack, very easy )))
[15:34] <mozg> i've updated from 0.61.7 to 0.67.3 without any issues

[15:35] <Psi-Jack> Cool. I've been needing to update, but I wanted to wait till it was at least 0.67.3. :)
[15:35] <mozg> yeah, they've fixed several serious bugs

[15:35] <mozg> just upgraded live without any downtime
[15:37] <Psi-Jack> Cool. And what about compatability with older ceph clients? I have Proxmox VE 3.1, and it it uses a mix of the qemu-RBD-ceph and ceph's client stuff to talk to RBD and all.

[21:16] <gpmidi> FYI, in case anyone reading through the logs runs into the same issue I did....
[21:16] <gpmidi> I was having problems with an assert failing in the OSDs that was causing them to crash. The assert in question was related to the time it was taking to perform a full sync (man 2 sync). After some help from sage/sagelap/sagewk and others I was able to determine that the sync was occasionally taking more than 10 minutes because I had write caching set to enable very large amounts of write caching. This resulted in the OSDs and other non-ceph related pro
[21:16] <gpmidi> Note: I am aware of the major risks assoicated with the write caching settings I was using. The data being written to the systems in question was all replicated elsewhere such that losing a system or two and all of its local data isn't a problem.

[23:54] <jharley> restart the mons, and then restart the OSDs?
[23:57] <jharley> sorry, 'cluster_network' not public network
[23:58] <gregsfortytwo1> switching monitor IPs is a pain; if you really want to you can extract their monmaps, edit them, and inject them
[23:58] <cjh973> jharley: i believe that's how i did it but i did it before people were using it
[23:59] <gregsfortytwo1> but it's probably easier to create new monitors at the new IPs and then remove the old ones one at a time
