[16:52] <mozg> my primary osd server has 8x3TB SAS2 drives
[16:53] <mozg> I was wondering if there might be any issues if my second osd server will have SATA3 drives instead of the SAS2 drives?
[16:54] <janos> mozg: potentially speed and reliability. but a good part fot he point is not caring so much about reliability
[16:54] <janos> i'd do it
[16:54] <janos> speed would potentially be my only convern
[16:54] <mozg> janos, thanks
[16:54] <janos> concern - if i could type
[16:54] <mozg> ))
[16:55] <mozg> at the moment my second osd server is a 3 year old box with old xeons and enterprise sata drives
[16:55] <mozg> in a cluster this server is giving me so much grief (((
[16:55] <janos> dang
[16:55] <mozg> i have a feeling that all my cluster stability problems relate to this old server
[16:56] <mozg> even though I do not have a direct evidence for that
[16:56] <mozg> so, the reason for the update is to 1) have better hardware and 2) improve cluster stability
[16:57] <janos> sounds reasonable ;)

[17:28] <jhujhiti> i wish what i was working on was for my own entertainment
[17:28] <n1md4> Hi. I've built a test cluster this morinng, 1 admin node, and 3 osdserver nodes (3 osds on each). I've prepared and activated the osds, but have this error when copying ceph.conf across nodes http://pastebin.com/520YHhMX . I can see the error is that ceph.conf doesn't exist on the admin node, and that's correct. I've followed the wiki and no where does it mention installing ceph on the admin node; only ceph-deploy. Any help?
[17:28] <jhujhiti> shucks, looks like i'm going to put a clustering filesystem on top of an rbd volume then
[17:29] <alfredodeza> n1md4: wow that looks like a bug
[17:29] <peetaur2> jhujhiti: I thought a bit about such a thing. What fs would you choose?
[17:30] <jhujhiti> i've used ocfs2 in the past
[17:30] <alfredodeza> n1md4: that should get fixed in the next release of ceph-deploy, but could you open a bug in the tracker?
[17:30] <jhujhiti> all of these clustering filesystems have performance issues, but this is a low-volume, low-performance situation
[17:30] <alfredodeza> n1md4: http://tracker.ceph.com/projects/devops/issues/new
[17:30] <n1md4> alfredodeza: so is it correct, that the admin node only has ceph-deploy installed on it?
[17:31] <alfredodeza> correct
[17:31] <alfredodeza> what happens there is that it is creating a temporary file and then moving it
[17:31] <alfredodeza> I am not sure why it is not creating it
[17:32] <n1md4> alfredodeza: what else should I paste in the bug? Never posted one before
[17:32] <alfredodeza> that output, a nice title and make sure you assign it to me :)
[17:34] <n1md4> okay. when's the next release due? I was hoping to play with the cluster today..

[17:58] * bandrus (~Adium@66-87-119-108.pools.spcsdns.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 480 seconds)
[17:58] <peetaur2> I'm not familiar with the "ceph-deploy admin ..." command. But did you say ceph health fails? I'd like to see that one.
[17:59] <n1md4> -su: ceph: command not found
[17:59] * bandrus (~Adium@66-87-119-108.pools.spcsdns.net) has joined #ceph
[17:59] <peetaur2> oh I see.
[17:59] <n1md4> but, alfredodeza has just pointed out that can only be run from a node.
[17:59] <peetaur2> Well I have ceph-common on my admin client.
[17:59] <peetaur2> not just ceph-deploy.
[17:59] <peetaur2> and so my admin client has the ceph command, and can do a ceph health

[18:00] <n1md4> I'd have thought that would be necessary; but I'm a ceph noob.
[18:01] <n1md4> Just following the guide http://ceph.com/docs/master/start/quick-ceph-deploy/ step 6 / 7
[18:01] <n1md4> is where it's failed me
[18:01] <peetaur2> I'm somewhere in between noob and starting up a production cluster ;)
[18:01] <n1md4> hah! best place
[18:01] <peetaur2> I've tinkered and destroyed my test cluster a few times
[18:01] <peetaur2> and repaired all but once
[18:01] <n1md4> well, maybe I'll just install ceph-common and be done with it.
[18:01] <peetaur2> and also I manually copied my admin keyring and ceph.conf into my admin node /etc/ceph, which solved a few things
[18:02] <peetaur2> maybe it is trying to copy it from /etc/ceph to the node instead of ~ceph/cluster/ like the quickstart suggests
[18:02] <n1md4> Well, if anything I can report wiki 'errors' ;)

[21:42] <n1md4> alfredodeza: I only had ceph-deploy installed
[21:42] <alfredodeza> n1md4: ah, so you skipped like a bunch of steps then :)
[21:42] <n1md4> But, found out, I didn't actually need ceph installed, mkdir /etc/ceph was enough to push the files out.
[21:43] <alfredodeza> ceph-deploy will help you get ceph installed
[21:43] <n1md4> Didn't need to skip, just mkdir, then cracked on :)
[21:43] <alfredodeza> but you can't do anything ceph-related if you don't have ceph installed in the remote hosts

[21:43] <n1md4> hah, no, well I'm doing that from the osdservers and clients ... it would make sense to install on the admni node though ;)

[21:45] <n1md4> it seems to be okay now, except for not being about it install mon on the other nodes
[21:45] <n1md4> I've ticketed that too
[21:46] <n1md4> http://tracker.ceph.com/issues/6552
[21:46] <alfredodeza> n1md4: it looks like a ulimit issue
[21:46] <alfredodeza> make sure your user can set the proper ulimits
[21:46] <alfredodeza> this line in your logs is a tell:
[21:46] <alfredodeza> [pp-ceph-2][DEBUG ] failed: 'ulimit -n 32768; /usr/bin/ceph-mon -i pp-ceph-2 --pid-file /var/run/ceph/mon.pp-ceph-2.pid -c /etc/ceph/ceph.conf '
[21:47] <alfredodeza> you also have a bunch of warnings that need to be addressed
[21:47] <alfredodeza> ceph-deploy is actually telling you what you need to fix there :)
[21:47] <alfredodeza> for example: pp-ceph-2 is not defined in `mon initial members`
[21:48] <n1md4> don't think I've defined any osd's anywhere
[21:48] <alfredodeza> it is complaining about mons, not osds
[21:48] <n1md4> ceph-deploy has likely done something clever though
[21:49] <n1md4> sure .. those either :) Just following the guide, that wasn't a step
[21:49] <alfredodeza> n1md4: it does that when you call `ceph-deploy new {nodes}`
[21:49] <alfredodeza> it add those nodes as mon initial members
[21:49] <alfredodeza> if you `cat ceph.conf` they should be there
[21:51] <n1md4> can't see them in there, just a bit about [global]
[21:51] <alfredodeza> n1md4: try running ceph-deploy somehwere else, to test it out, and you should see them defined
[21:52] <n1md4> alfredodeza: I can't really, only have the resources I've got, and they're already configured.
[21:53] <alfredodeza> n1md4: the whole thing looks like this for me (and it should for you) http://fpaste.org/47011/86675713/raw/
[21:53] <n1md4> ah! yes, I see that now.
[21:53] <alfredodeza> excellent
[21:53] <n1md4> I've only got 1 defined
[21:53] <alfredodeza> there is your problem :)
[21:53] <n1md4> node-1
[21:53] <n1md4> manually add them there, and push the config?
[21:54] <alfredodeza> sure
[21:54] <n1md4> unsure how to address the ulimit error. Any ideas there?
[21:54] <xarses> update sysctl to allow the higher ulimit
