[0:35] <MACscr1> if im going to use all 12 spindle drives on my storage nodes for osd's, how do you think i should handle the OS? Should i simply run a live usb drive with persistent storage for Ubuntu?
[0:45] * BillK (~BillK-OFT@58-7-166-34.dyn.iinet.net.au) has joined #ceph
[0:46] <ron-slc> We purchase a single 2.5" spinner for OS. Often times these can be covertly mounted in most chassis.
[0:46] * LPG (~LPG@c-76-104-197-224.hsd1.wa.comcast.net) has joined #ceph
[0:47] <ron-slc> USB often dies because your OS logs and churn kill the flash stick... If going way of flash, you're looking at ~$80 for 2GB SLC-Type flash sticks.
[0:48] <ron-slc> If you plan to have a MON(itor) node, this also is best on a spinner, as the monitor process will write TERRABYTES in just a few weeks. Well above the life-cycle recommendations of most SSD drives.

[1:30] <MACscr1> loading the OS into ram should reduce any activity on the usb drive
[1:32] <MACscr1> its pretty common for a san or flash to run from a usb flash drive or an ssd

[3:12] <nerdtron> hi all
[3:13] <nerdtron> what is the correct syntax for declaring a public network?
[3:16] <lurbs> http://ceph.com/docs/master/rados/configuration/network-config-ref/#public-network
[3:18] <lurbs> Where "{public-network/netmask}" is just a subnet in the CIDR notation (eg 10.0.0.0/24).

[7:52] <zleslie> I am thinking of building some ceph nodes, and I am wondering if there are any issues using ceph between two different distros. Anyone have experience with this?
[7:53] <zleslie> Also, does ceph run on consumer arm boards like the raspberry pi or beagleboard?
[7:54] <[1]pipat> Hi, I am testing ceph Dumpling with one node with 2 OSD (each with 1 TB Disk + sdd partition). I got stuck with ceph-deploy not being able to create the correct journal for a while but managed to get to install but the pg are all stale+active+degrade. Anyone knows how to clean up or remove the corrupted pgs
[7:56] <[1]pipat> Plan to add two more nodes later but I want to clean up the cluster before adding more nodes.

[11:55] <joao> your cluster is degraded; can you pastebin your 'ceph -s'?
[12:02] <nerdtron> i'm not comfortable editing the ceph.conf file directly as ceph-deploy did it already on the first install

[17:23] <Xiol> Hello gents. My employer has recently bought 6 of these bad boys: http://www.sgi.com/products/storage/jbod/mis_jbod.html - 72 3TB drives per chassis (32 drives per compute unit). I've come to realise that this is a fairly terrible choice of platform for Ceph looking through the documentation and mailing lists, but regardless, the money has been spent and I need to make it work ;)
[17:23] * sleinen (~Adium@77-58-245-10.dclient.hispeed.ch) has joined #ceph
[17:24] <Xiol> The question is, one disk per OSD is probably going to be untenable on here, looking at the RAM usage
[17:25] <Xiol> And I'm presuming I can't run one OSD for multiple disks without some kind of abstraction layer (RAID, LVM)
[17:25] <Xiol> not really sure how to go about dividing this up
[17:26] <Xiol> we've got several other 'normal' servers (Dell R720s) for MDS, etc.

[17:27] <tnt> Xiol: yeah, you'd need to make them RAID0 or something.
[17:27] <tnt> or if you feel like living on the edge, you could use btrfs and have several underlying physical device for it :p
[17:28] <Xiol> tnt: Unfortuntely I suspect that would require a custom kernel and all that jazz. We're mainly a RHEL/CentOS shop, so using Ubuntu 12.04 is pretty bleeding edge for us lot anyway ;)

[20:35] <joelio> best is open to interpretation. I use fuse because I don't have worry about keeping kernels up to date, but I only have small performance requirements.
[20:35] <alphe> I found the file it is simply /etc/ceph/admin.client.keyring
[20:36] <alphe> joleio hum how can i check the version of my cephFS ?(kernelmodule)
[20:36] <topro_> hi, is there some ETA for 0.67.3?
[20:37] <alphe> topro I dont know
[20:42] <Gugge-47527> does the cephfs kernel module have other version numbers than the kernel version? :)
[20:45] <ccourtaut> yehudasa: hi
[20:46] <joelio> alphe: the kernel module will be linked to the version of the kernel you'reusing as Ceph's kerel module is upstreamed to the linux kernel
[20:46] <ccourtaut> i'm currently looking at the radosgw-agent, i'm now able to test it against my local setup
[20:47] <ccourtaut> yehudasa_: i was looking at the full sync for the data, and i wonder what will be the method to copy an object from a region to another
[20:47] <ccourtaut> is it referenced in this documentation : http://wiki.ceph.com/index.php?title=RESTful_API_for_DR_%2F%2F_Geo-Replication
[20:47] <ccourtaut> ?
[20:47] <joelio> alphe: so if you have an old kernel (or just one slightly out of date - i.e. I'm using 3.8 and I have issues with kernel module) then you may have trouble.
[20:48] <alphe> 3.8.0-19
[20:48] <alphe> and have no problem

[20:58] <alphe> disk size is nowhere to be near the real one ...
[20:59] <joelio> yea, it's a bug, fixed in later kernel..
[21:00] <joelio> so, as you're using raring.. do you start to roll your own kernels or stick with fuse. The decision is yours :)
[21:00] <alphe> fuse I guess don t want to compile my own kernels every weeks ...
[21:01] <joelio> you could always use a 13.10 kernel to test, but you'll be going outside of the package manager again, just like kernel, so if security and time is of value, I'd stick to fuse
