[3:35] <dgbaley27> Has anyone used ceph in the initrd for a root filesystem (rbd or cephfs)?
[3:45] * BillK (~BillK@58-7-104-61.dyn.iinet.net.au) has joined #ceph
[3:52] <nigwil> dgbaley27: is that similar to diskless nove-compute via RBD for OpenStack?
[3:53] <dgbaley27> I don't know what that is, but I'll look into it. I'm looking to do it for a lab of workstations though which currently have nfs root
[3:56] <dgbaley27> I don't see any reason why either way isn't technically feasible. However, I'm not clear about the pros and cons of rbd vs cephfs. Performance and minimal code in the initrd are my main concerns
[3:59] <nigwil> joshd pointed me to the commit history for folsom-volumes that shows the support for Openstack: https://github.com/jdurgin/nova/commits/folsom-volumes
[4:00] <nigwil> given the CephFS is not claimed to be "production ready" you might want to stick to RBD for now
[4:05] <dgbaley27> Can multiple clients use a read-only block device?
[4:05] * rustam (~rustam@94.15.91.30) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[4:06] <dgbaley27> fwiw, I am using ceph block devices for vm roots in my proxmox cluster
[4:06] * DW-10297 (~DW-10297@dhcp92.cmh.ee.net) has joined #ceph
[4:06] * DW-10297 is now known as Teduardo
[4:06] <nigwil> I believe so. Even better they can be R/W but with COW the only cost is the actual amount of data written (compared with the master imagE)
[4:06] <Teduardo> any ceph/openstack geniuses in here atm?
[4:07] <dgbaley27> nigwil: do you mean by setting up cloned snapshots?
[4:08] <dgbaley27> I like to avoid RW root because I want to be able to make changes to the original and I don't trust the semantics for what happens to nodes with custom data
[4:08] <dgbaley27> So I make sure the system can run with only /tmp /var /run and the api filesystems as rw
[4:09] <nigwil> I've not tried it but I thought the cow idea came as part of the design, I'm just in the process of trying this out so I don't understand it (yet)
[4:10] <nigwil> I'm using this guide: http://ceph.com/docs/master/rbd/rbd-openstack/
[4:10] <nigwil> and I see this: ceph auth get-or-create client.images mon 'allow r' osd 'allow class-read object_prefix rbd_children, allow rwx pool=images'
[4:11] <dgbaley27> I'll look and see if it has any value outside of openstack, because I'm not using openstack (although I'm looking in to it)
[4:12] <nigwil> Openstack is just using libvirt+QEMU-->librbd so you can presumably do the same thing manually
[4:13] <nigwil> or rather I mean with out Openstack (replicating the needed steps)
[4:14] <nigwil> Teduardo: it would be great if we had a resident Openstack guru :-) I'm a complete newb so far
[4:15] <Teduardo> yeah, I installed OpenStack on Ubuntu 13.04 today and it worked OK except that I can't get the virtual machines to connect to the internet through the host =)

[11:35] <martoss> hey folks, is the ceph osd data directory just a path in the filesystem or does it has to be a mountpoint for a (mounted) fs?

[11:46] <nigwil> martoss: can be either, although recommended that the OSD be on a separate partion.
[11:48] <martoss> ah ok, I think I just found the problem, I have to clear the directory before...
[11:54] <martoss> interesting, now I get
[11:54] <martoss> pushing conf and monmap to mybooklive:/tmp/mkfs.ceph.168bdebf6052775003418b2f9e5dbeac
[11:54] <martoss> unable to read/decode monmap from /tmp/mkfs.ceph.168bdebf6052775003418b2f9e5dbeac/monmap: (22) Invalid argument
[11:54] <martoss> failed: 'ssh root@mybooklive /sbin/mkcephfs -d /tmp/mkfs.ceph.168bdebf6052775003418b2f9e5dbeac --init-daemon osd.2'
[11:57] <martoss> monmap looks like a binary file to me. Could this be a little endian/big endian problem?
[11:57] <martoss> osd.2 is on a powerpc while the rest is on amd64 arch nodes.
[12:02] <nigwil> could be, x86 is littleE and PPC is usually bigE, but I would expect all messages to be in network byte-order so that should be ok
[12:14] <martoss> well, i tried the monmaptool with --print option. The copied monmap cannot be read on powerpc. If I copy the monmap file to x86, it can print it.
[12:17] * loicd (~loic@magenta.dachary.org) Quit (Quit: Leaving.)
[12:18] <nigwil> urk...you could dump a few lines of bytes from both files and see if the byte sequence looks ok :-)

[17:27] <NXCZ> ther are no errors or warnings in the ceph-osd.0.log
[17:29] <NXCZ> does it take awhile to create a osd or should it already list it?

[18:23] <matt_> NXCZ, it's not going to heal because your crush map is wrong
[18:24] <matt_> it's trying to put data across hosts and if you're only running one or two hosts (default replica is 3 I think) then it will appear 50% degraded
[18:25] <matt_> you need to do this guide in reverse - http://jcftang.github.io/2012/09/06/going-from-replicating-across-osds-to-replicating-across-hosts-in-a-ceph-cluster/

[21:43] <dgbaley27> I've been playing around with mapping the same rbd on multiple clients, and the behavior is not clear to me. To test, I created an rbd, mapped it on one host, and made a test file system. I then mapped and mounted that file system on two clients.
[21:44] <dgbaley27> All I am interested in is that the clients have read-only access to the block device. The contents of the filesystem appeared to be fixed from the time of mounting, but I don't know if it has to do with the fs layer or the rbd layer.
[21:46] <joshd1> dgbaley27: the best way to guarantee it won't change is to take a snapshot of the rbd image and give that to the multiple clients, since snapshots are read-only
[21:47] * TMM (~hp@535240C7.cm-6-3b.dynamic.ziggo.nl) has joined #ceph
[21:47] <dgbaley27> joshd1: that make sense, and I guess is why there's no need to have the ability to make an rbd read-only (along-side lock and protect)

[21:49] <dgbaley27> However, allowing for a single writer would be desirable to me.
[21:49] <dgbaley27> If nothing better comes along, I can work around that by deleting snapshots and creating new ones of the same name
[21:50] <joshd1> having even a single writer going on the same fs that other clients are reading will confuse the other clients, since ext4/xfs etc. aren't designed for the disk changing under them
