[0:00] <noob21> dmick: a little bit. i have to learn it because i just took a job with facebook. so in a few weeks i'm going to get the crash course
[0:00] * xiaoxi (~xiaoxiche@134.134.137.71) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:01] <joao> noob21, #136 has been somewhat addressed
[0:01] <wer> ty dmick.
[0:02] <joao> I'm not sure if there's something in the ticket that might be missing or imagined at the time in a different way, but there's already a somewhat 'sensible' grammar and 'help' dumps (although I'm unsure if it works for each subcommand)
[0:03] <noob21> ok
[0:03] <dmick> noob21: the way I'd recommend is: get a github account if you don't have one, fork ceph/ceph, clone that to your local ws, hack away; when done, push to your forked repo and email for a review request; when done, send a pull request and we'll integrate it
[0:03] <noob21> just wondering
[0:03] <joao> noob21, but feel free to navigate the code and let us know if you need help ;)
[0:03] <dmick> feel free to tear into that radosgw-admin bug :)
[0:03] <noob21> sounds easy enough :)
[0:03] <noob21> it's all c++ right?
[0:03] <dmick> mostly c++; some python, some c
[0:04] <dmick> some bash
[0:04] <noob21> i know python the best but it wouldn't hurt to learn more c and c++
[0:09] <wer> dmick: do you know if there some trick to making rest-bench work? It doesn't seem to like anything I throw at it :( I seem to recall having this exact trouble before.... it kind of mangles --api-host and bombs....
[0:10] <noob21> dmick: ok it is forked :)
[0:11] <wer> rest-bench --api-host=localhost --bucket=test_bucket -b200 -t2 write ...... seems to parse host=localhost and gives me usage. And I don't know what --block-size is. Assuming bytes...

[0:14] * sander (~chatzilla@c-174-62-162-253.hsd1.ct.comcast.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 480 seconds)
[0:15] <dmick> wer: I don't, but I can read the code if you like
[0:15] <wer> nah. I can go do that if that is what you have to do :) thanks!
[0:16] <wer> internet just wants to talk about shooting rifles when I go looking for syntax help :)
[0:17] * vata (~vata@2607:fad8:4:6:8161:b31d:b02b:fb00) Quit (Quit: Leaving.)
[0:22] * mattbenjamin (~matt@aa2.linuxbox.com) Quit (Ping timeout: 480 seconds)
[0:29] <wer> dmick: ... I may be too stuupid. I just pulled apt-get source rest-bench and got some ancient copy of ceph-0.41 with no mentions of rest-bench... I don't know where rest-bench comes from at this point.
[0:35] <wer> I bet it wants to create bucket... which means I have to use keys.... can't test an public bucket maybe.
[0:38] <wer> gad. I got it dmick..
[0:43] * loicd (~loic@magenta.dachary.org) Quit (Quit: Leaving.)

[0:57] * dosaboy (~gizmo@12.231.120.253) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[0:57] <dpippenger> anyone using ceph with openstack have any pointers on getting the rbd_cache option passed through to kvm?
[0:58] * PerlStalker (~PerlStalk@72.166.192.70) Quit (Quit: ...)
[1:00] <dmick> wer: sorry, glad you made it
[1:02] <joshd> dpippenger: if you always want to use it, you can just put rbd cache = true in your ceph.conf
[1:03] <joshd> dpippenger: on the compute node, that is
[1:03] <dpippenger> hrm, I tried that but I didn't see much difference, I was assuming the kvm interface to librdb was overriding it with it's default of no cache
[1:04] <wer> dmick: no worries. The moral of the story is that it wants to make a bucket.... so it requires permissions. I figured if the permissions were such that the bucket I told it to use were publicly accessible then it would try.... but it doesn't. I think this is more acceptable then tsung on puts and there appears much room for throughput growth, as io on many disks is not being hit. I think once I get my 10gig links up this will get interesting :)
[1:05] <wer> oh, however rest-bench does explode once it finishes with a fantastic assert issue.... but I am not complaining.
[1:07] <dpippenger> joshd: you know I think I just messed up the config, I put the rbd cache in [global] instead of [client]
[1:07] <dmick> wer: file an issue
[1:07] <joshd> dpippenger: it should be getting picked up, and ceph.conf overrides kvm's setting
[1:07] <joshd> dpippenger: global works too; it's the top of the hierarchy
[1:08] <dpippenger> hrm.. balls... I put these three directives in, are there any more I would need?
[1:08] <dpippenger> rbd cache = true
[1:08] <dpippenger> rbd cache max dirty = 32000
[1:08] <dpippenger> rbd cache target dirty = 3200
[1:10] <dpippenger> oh wait, crap that's in bytes
[1:10] <wer> dmick: where can I file this issue? I think it explodes cleaning up after itself. I can see the space being freed up until explosion.
[1:10] <dpippenger> who wants to cache in bytes lol
[1:10] <wer> redmine?
[1:10] <dpippenger> I'll try adding some zeros
[1:11] <joshd> dpippenger: yeah, that's probably the problem. 32k isn't enough for everybody
[1:13] <wer> http://pastebin.com/h8KphR2M of explosion.
[1:16] <dmick> wer: yes, redmine
[1:16] * allsystemsarego (~allsystem@188.25.131.2) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[1:16] <wer> Do I need a username?
[1:16] <dmick> I think you need to register to be able to file an issue, yes
[1:17] <dmick> just so you can be notified of changes in the issue if nothing else.
[1:17] <wer> Is it tied to the feds?
[1:17] <wer> :)
[1:18] * rturk-away is now known as rturk
[1:20] <dmick> lol

[2:13] <dmick> so I was hoping I could tell github to create a new branch with your pull req, but I don't know if it can do that

[13:52] <lxo> I've been putting off the upgrade to 0.56.1 while I performed some surgery on my home network after a lightning strike. now I'm about to start building it, but I wonder if 0.57 or so is imminent, in which case I'd hold on to 0.55 just a little bit longer
[13:55] <tnt> madkiss: let's see if it boots :p
[13:55] <lxo> I should note that 0.55 has been pretty solid for my ceph fs uses. after I figured out the option to avoid ceph.ko running out of memory getting listings of large dirs, and I mostly stopped using ceph-fuse (and its share of problems) for heavy-ish backups, I've been pretty happy with it
[13:56] <lxo> so, unlike argonaut, that I wasn't comfortable recommending for distributed filesystem uses, it's looking like I'm going to be able to do so with bobtail
[13:57] <lxo> congrats on the great progress
[13:57] <tnt> what kernel client version do you use ?

[20:58] <sagelap> if you have the core, the epoch the pg is on would be nice, along with that osdmap, and the pgid
[20:58] <sagelap> a bit of digging in gdb to get that info

[21:30] <noob2> i was hoping to give the programmers at work a demo of how this works using python and rhel 6
[21:31] <noob2> looks like librbd is included in the rpm packages for bobtail :D. I think i'm good to go!

[21:37] <xmltok> it uses apache with fastcgi, so if you are talking about ssl, you can do that with apache
[21:38] <noob2> gotcha
[21:38] <noob2> it looked like s3's api encrypts client side and then uploads to the gateway
[21:38] <noob2> maybe ceph doesn't need to even worry about it
[21:40] <Gugge-47527> if i have osd's of different sizes, so i have to play around with weight, or does it "just work"?
[21:40] <noob2> no you have to play around with the weight
[21:40] <noob2> i'm using a weight of '1' for each TB of hard drive size

[21:47] <Gugge-47527> super

[21:51] <Kioob> iostat works, but show emcpowerig, emcpowerhq, emcpowerha, etc instead of rbd6, rbd7, rbd8, etc
[21:51] <noob2> yeah i got the same thing. it was quite odd
[21:51] <noob2> i was like what the hell is that? haha
[21:52] <Kioob> and for LVM, I have to register *each* device in the lvm.conf
[21:52] <noob2> ah
