[0:31] <Karcaw_> is there documentation on using the trivial map somewhere? i found the rados api docs, but i was looking for examples or archetecture info
[0:32] <sjust> the trivial map is deprecated
[0:32] * idnc_sk (~idnc_sk@92.240.234.27) has joined #ceph
[0:32] <sjust> it got replaced by the object map
[0:32] <sjust> same basic idea, much better implementation
[0:32] <idnc_sk> ceph --version
[0:32] <idnc_sk> ceph version 0.51 (commit:c03ca95d235c9a072dcd8a77ad5274a52e93ae30)
[0:32] <idnc_sk> HEALTH_WARN 4224 pgs stuck inactive; 4224 pgs stuck unclean
[0:32] <idnc_sk> >> same after upgrade
[0:32] <Karcaw_> right i saw that, but where is the docs for object map then?
[0:33] <idnc_sk> can this be cause by virtio blk?
[0:33] <idnc_sk> *caused
[0:33] <sjust> Karcaw_: one sec
[0:34] <sjust> ah, omap hasn't been added to the C api
[0:34] <Karcaw_> the web api for librados still refers to tmap calls... did the api change?
[0:34] <sjust> do you need to use it from the C api, or is the C++ api ok?
[0:34] * Tamil (~Adium@38.122.20.226) has joined #ceph
[0:34] <Karcaw_> i just had a use for it, so i was trying to figure out how it worked.. i'll look at the C++ version..

[0:35] <sjust> the comments are pretty good
[0:35] <sjust> oh, and in the normal area as the omap_ methods
[0:35] <sjust> that is, in IoCtx
[0:36] <sjust> the good comments are in the Object(Read|Write)Operation area though
[0:39] * Tamil (~Adium@2607:f298:a:607:78d7:9d8a:aba2:5013) has left #ceph

[4:59] <dec> is there any way to look at some sort of aggregated performance data for my rados pool?
[5:00] <dec> I'm importing a bunch of disks into RBD images, and finding them quite slow to import - it'd be nice to know whether that's because something else is hammering the cluster on an existing disk, or because something is wrong...
[5:03] <dmick> there are the stats counters for each daemon, but AFAIK nothing easily available to aggregate them
[5:05] <dmick> although searching, I find this, which I submit without understanding: https://github.com/BrightcoveOS/Diamond/wiki/collectors-CephCollector
[5:05] <dec> hmm, OK
[5:06] <dec> I don't know what I'm looking at :)
[5:06] <dec> Diamond? BrightcoveOS?
[5:06] <dec> :)
[5:06] <dmick> it seems to be a python daemon that collects stats and publishes them to Graphite
[5:06] <dmick> https://github.com/BrightcoveOS/Diamond
[5:06] <dec> hmm, cool.
[5:06] <dec> we have a graphite instance.
[5:06] <dmick> so this might hook it up
[5:07] <dec> cool; thanks. in any case - my mind has already jumped to: is there much in the way of standard best practices so far for things like configuring PGs for a pool?
[5:07] <dec> or are the defaults "pretty good" ?
[5:07] <dmick> defaults tend to be lowish
[5:08] <dec> because it's not possible to change PG count for a pool after creation, right?
[5:08] <dmick> right, not yet
[5:08] <dmick> I'm not the best one to ask, but
[5:09] <dec> but if I found I needed to change it - I could create a new pool with the new PG size, and move images from one to the other?
[5:09] <dec> who's the PG/CRUSH expert? :)
[5:09] <dmick> at least in theory, but unfortunately, say, rbd copy doesn't support cross-pool directly, so you'd have to export/import
[5:09] <dec> oh ok.
[5:10] <dmick> http://ceph.com/docs/master/rados/operations/placement-groups/
[5:11] <dmick> and as for the expert...several know more than me. I'd ask on the mailing list
[5:13] * sjustlaptop (~sam@68-119-138-53.dhcp.ahvl.nc.charter.com) has joined #ceph
[5:16] <dec> OK, thanks
[5:16] <dec> I've read that doco before - but still struggle with "do I have enough PGs?"
[5:17] <dec> the default that mkcephfs created is actually more than what's recommended by the (osds*100)/replicas formula
[5:19] <dmick> ah. IIRC 'mkpool' is still quite small however, as is ceph osd pool create
[5:19] <dmick> although I guess with osd pool create you have to give a number
[5:19] <dmick> although...eh, maybe not
[5:20] <dec> heh. :)
[5:21] <dmick> yes, yes you do. I was misreading the syntax

[5:32] <dmick> the good news is it's not a very critical setting
[5:32] <dec> oh, right
[5:33] <dec> will it not affect performance all that much?
[5:33] <dmick> if it's too low, things contend for write more than they could
[5:33] <dmick> but I don't think it's that sensitive past very low values
[5:36] <dec> that's good to know - it was my slow 'rbd import's are what got me thinking about it...
