[0:49] <sagewk> yehudasa: i think cp should iterate over large objects (like it does with omap keys); that'll bite someone sooner or later

[1:31] <gregaf> yehudasa: I agree with sagewk on iterating over objects
[1:32] <gregaf> similarly, rather than using a #define of 1 for how many omap entries to do at a time, let's set a larger default and make it an optional (perhaps undocumented) parameter as part of the cp call
[1:33] <gregaf> oh, sorry, I see the default did get bumped, but still, it's easy to make it settable
[1:34] <gregaf> also, the pool copy needs to be parallel, or it will take absolutely forever

[15:51] <nhm> man, I had no idea how annoying it is to get linux-tools-common debs built from an upstream kernel.
[15:53] <joao> nhm, what are you doing here today?
[15:53] <joao> shouldn't you be launching fireworks?
[15:56] <nhm> joao: later. :)
[15:56] <joao> I envy you
[15:56] <nhm> joao: you don't have fireworks?
[15:57] <joao> I wish I could buy fireworks without being permitted to do so, go through a lot of legal hoops and then having a permit from the local city council, hire the local fire department and police to attend
[15:57] <nhm> ah, I see
[15:57] <joao> s/being permitted/having a permit
[15:58] <nhm> It used to be illegal to sell fireworks in Minnesota, but the law was changed a while back I think.
[15:59] <nhm> Honestly we'll probably stick with sparklers and little things for the kids.
[15:59] <nhm> It's going to be ~37-38c here today!
[15:59] <joao> wow
[16:00] <joao> it's been ~30c here, although today it dropped to ~25c
[16:00] <joao> and it's been way too hot imo
[16:00] <nhm> ugh, I wish it would drop here. It's been 32c+ for the last week.
[16:01] <joao> yikes
[16:01] <nhm> and more like 35c for much of the time.
[16:01] <joao> we'll get those temperatures too, around late July/early August, I suppose
[16:02] <joao> we always do
[16:02] <joao> sucks, but such is life
[16:02] <nhm> I could handle it if it weren't for the humidity.
[16:02] <joao> as long as the humidity drops, I'm okay with it
[16:02] <joao> yeah, I know what you mean
[16:02] <nhm> 72pt dew point today.
[16:03] <joao> I think we're developing some sort of tropical weather around here; I don't remember the summer being this humid ever
[16:03] <joao> but then again, I tend to forget most of everything, so I may be wrong
[16:04] <nhm> hehe
[16:05] <nhm> Alright, I'm going to exercise before it gets any hotter in here.
[16:05] <nhm> yyl
[16:05] <nhm> er ttyl
[16:06] <joao> have fun
[16:06] <joao> specially with those fireworks ;)

[19:49] <NashTrash> Hello Ceph'ers
[19:49] <NashTrash> Happy 4th to those here in the States.
[19:50] <NashTrash> Quick question from a ceph noob
[19:51] <NashTrash> I have a Precise client that I want to connect to my ceph cluster with CephFS. When I modprobe my vanilla setup, I get a module not found error. What do I need to install before I can use CephFS client?
[19:52] <iggy> I think ceph is included in precise, but with ceph's ongoing development, you're usually better off trying newer vanilla kernels than distro kernels
[19:53] <NashTrash> iggy: I thought it would be in Precise too, but all of my vanilla instances give that modprobe error
[19:54] <iggy> what does "modprobe -l |grep -i ceph" say?
[19:54] <NashTrash> Nothing at all
[19:55] <The_Bishop> NashTrash: you have booted the vanilla kernel before modprobe?
[19:56] <The_Bishop> what is the exact message on modprobe?
[19:56] <Fruit> strange, ubuntu 11.10 has that module
[19:57] <joao> so does 12.04
[20:01] <NashTrash> I am using the 12.04 64-bit Server image on an Openstack cloud
[20:02] <joao> have no idea what might be wrong there, then
[20:02] <NashTrash> Here is the modprobe message:
[20:02] <NashTrash> root@server-2150:~# modprobe ceph
[20:02] <NashTrash> FATAL: Module ceph not found.
[20:02] <joao> I have a 12.04 ubuntu desktop edition and it's present; I would assume it was present on the server version as well...
[20:04] <joao> are you sure you're using the right kernel? This is the only thing that comes to mind :\
[20:07] <The_Bishop> find /lib/modules -iname "*ceph*.ko"
[20:07] <NashTrash> joao: I am using the stock kernel that comes with 12.04 server
[20:07] <NashTrash> The_Bishop: Nothing from that find
[20:08] <NashTrash> find / -name *ceph* finds nothing
[20:08] <joao> I must say I baffled
[20:08] <NashTrash> Me too
[20:09] <joao> unfortunately it's 4th of July, and the team is away
[20:09] <The_Bishop> here ubuntu12.04 with stock kernel:
[20:09] <The_Bishop> root@artefakt:~# modprobe -v libceph
[20:09] <The_Bishop> insmod /lib/modules/3.2.0-26-generic/kernel/net/ceph/libceph.ko
[20:09] <The_Bishop> root@artefakt:~# modprobe -v ceph
[20:09] <The_Bishop> insmod /lib/modules/3.2.0-26-generic/kernel/fs/ceph/ceph.ko
[20:09] <The_Bishop> root@artefakt:~#
[20:10] <NashTrash> Yeah. I just checked and even the Ubuntu Precise server press release talks about Ceph
[20:10] <Fruit> (re)install the kernel package?
[20:11] <NashTrash> That could be in my near future
[20:12] <Fruit> apt-get --reinstall install linux-image-$(uname -r)
[20:14] <The_Bishop> root@artefakt:~# grep ceph.ko /var/lib/dpkg/info/*.list
[20:14] <The_Bishop> /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-image-3.2.0-26-generic.list:/lib/modules/3.2.0-26-generic/kernel/net/ceph/libceph.ko
[20:14] <The_Bishop> /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-image-3.2.0-26-generic.list:/lib/modules/3.2.0-26-generic/kernel/fs/ceph/ceph.ko
[20:14] <The_Bishop> yes, it should be there
[20:14] <NashTrash> The_Bishop: Nothing
[20:14] <NashTrash> trying reinstall...
[20:15] <Fruit> The_Bishop: NashTrash is probably running the -server kernel, not the -generic
[20:16] <The_Bishop> Fruit: ok, i don't know about the -server kernel
[20:16] <NashTrash> Nope on the reinstall
[20:16] <NashTrash> bizzare
[20:18] <Fruit> what does your uname -r say?
[20:18] <NashTrash> 3.2.0-23-virtual
[20:18] <NashTrash> This is one of the ubuntu cloud images
[20:19] <Fruit> hrm, might be that that one doesn't contain ceph, then
[20:20] <NashTrash> That is what it is looking like, but that is a very odd omission
[20:20] <Fruit> you could apt-get install apt-file; apt-file update; apt-file search libceph.ko
[20:21] <Fruit> ah!
[20:21] <Fruit> I think I found it
[20:21] <NashTrash> All ear :)
[20:21] <NashTrash> ears
[20:21] <Fruit> you want to apt-get install linux-image-extra-3.2.0-23-virtual
[20:22] <Fruit> or even better: linux-image-extra-virtual
[20:22] <Fruit> which will make sure you always have the right version
[20:22] <NashTrash> in progress
[20:23] <NashTrash> ha...
[20:23] <NashTrash> root@server-2150:~# modprobe -l | grep ceph
[20:23] <NashTrash> kernel/fs/ceph/ceph.ko
[20:23] <NashTrash> kernel/net/ceph/libceph.ko
[20:23] <Fruit> there ya go
[20:23] <NashTrash> Well done. How did you find that?
[20:23] <Fruit> using the apt-file commands above
[20:23] <NashTrash> nice. Thanks fruit
[20:24] <NashTrash> Still very odd that they leave that out of the default cloud server image
[20:24] <Fruit> np
[20:27] <NashTrash> That did it. I was able to mount from the client
[20:31] <The_Bishop> Fruit: thx for the hint with apt-file!
[20:31] <Fruit> it's a very useful command
[20:33] <The_Bishop> i see :)
