[1:00] <dmick> yes, the default ceph module does not even include printk's, so I surmise DEBUG is also off
[1:13] <sagewk> dmick: we shoudl turn on dynamic debug on our kernels, if it is off. i thought the distros were all turning it on, but that may have just been redhat
[1:20] <dmick> I think it's on in our kernel

[18:38] <fghaas> hi everyone, I went to the enjoyable task of re-reading sage et al's 2007 RADOS paper today, and I ran across its "future work" list again, which mentions (1) key-value storage, (2) scalable FIFO queues, (3) object-granularity snapshots, (4) load balancing, (5) QoS, (6) parity-based redundancy. looks to me like (1) and (3) are essentially available in RADOS today, could someone let me know how far along the other four are, or if work on them has been abandoned
[18:47] <gregaf> fghaas: I wouldn't call them abandoned, but I don't think anybody ever started on them :)
[18:48] <gregaf> realistically, load-balancing ought to be taken care of passively by the object striping
[18:48] <fghaas> gregaf, "abandoned" wasn't meant to insinuate that I thought they were ever tackled :)
[18:49] <gregaf> parity-based redundancy will be a fun thing to implement someday in the future when other stuff is working, but I don't even remember what the QoS and FIFO queues would be
[18:50] <fghaas> the fifo thing is/was apparently something that googlefs does ... not sure if hadoop ever got that
[18:50] <fghaas> fair point about the striping

[20:15] <fghaas> gregaf, coming back to my earlier questions from the 2007 paper, have the available replication strategies ever changed in the meantime? specifically, is there now a star-shaped replication scheme where the primary OSD can replicate off to all others in parallel?
[20:15] <gregaf> no, it's now entirely primary replication
[20:16] <gregaf> I mean, it might be replicating to them in parallel; that's handled by the kernel networking system ;)
[20:16] <nhm> yay for abstraction
[20:17] <fghaas> so to clarify, splay and chain are gone?
[20:21] <gregaf> yes
[20:22] <gregaf> they greatly complicate the communication channels between OSDs and clients, and for reasonable replication factors (<5) they just didn't differentiate themselves enough
[20:22] <gregaf> jluis: you there?
[20:25] <fghaas> gregaf: makes sense, thanks
[20:26] * lofejndif (~lsqavnbok@9YYAAHM7D.tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net) Quit (Quit: gone)
[20:29] <fghaas> ... and with the absence of read load balancing, that also explains how you ensure read-after-write consistency, I suppose
[20:30] <sjust> fghaas: it certainly makes it easier
[20:30] <gregaf> that's one of the things that was greatly complicated by the other replication strategies, yes :)
[20:30] <joshd> read load balancing would be great fine for snapshots though
[20:30] <fghaas> fair enough, making something better by ripping out complicated stuff is definitely an improvement in my book :)
[20:30] <gregaf> that had all been ripped out by the time I started on the project, but IIRC they had the default usage stuff working (read-after-write was just fine), but in failure scenarios it was just too much coordination
[20:30] <sjust> joshd: yeah
[20:31] <gregaf> you can turn that on in rados just fine? unless you actually want it to be smart enough for read shedding rather than just distributed reads
[20:32] <sjust> gregaf: no, snapshot reads could be made actually safe rather than kinda-sorta safe
[20:32] <gregaf> ?
[20:32] <sjust> you could enable snapshot reads from replicas but not head reads
[20:33] <gregaf> oh, like as a config option, I get it

[22:55] <sjustlaptop> great, I love this thing
[22:55] <sjustlaptop> I can actually get work done

[23:10] <gregaf> he seems to poke his face in pretty close to it :p
[23:11] <nhm> gregaf: lots of terminals on a 13" screen will do that. ;)
[23:12] <sjustlaptop> nhm: it's fine, I'll upgrade to bigger screen when I go blind

[23:31] <dmick> did some set of athletes do so much worse at moving a ball around to specific places that they won't be invited to do that again?
[23:32] <jluis> kinda
[23:32] <jluis> we lost on penalty kicks to Spain
[23:33] <dmick> and again, by "we" you mean the set of athletes that wear the uniform identified with the country you were born in?
[23:33] <dmick> (just checking) :)
[23:33] <jluis> yes
[23:34] <jluis> I don't usually take football seriously, unless when it comes to national teams :\
[23:34] <rturk> dmick: lol

[23:35] <mikeryan> sagewk: joshd: review on wip_dho_scrub6
[23:35] <mikeryan> most graciously
[23:36] <jluis> dmick, I'd be way too bummed to move and hit you; I'd probably just throw a coffee cup at you :p
[23:40] <sagewk> mikeryan: looks good to me, assuming it takes some thrashing
[23:40] <mikeryan> thrashing as we speak
[23:41] <sagewk> also: you can help the gitbuilders avoid filling up their disks by blowing away old branches: git push origin :old_foo
[23:43] <mikeryan> done and done
[23:43] <joshd> I don't remember enough of that part of scrub to review that

[23:51] <elder> yehudasa do you know why the CEPH_OSD_OP_NOTIFY_ACK request, which sends an acknowledgement (but no data) considered a read request (passes CEPH_OSD_FLAG_READ flag)?
[23:53] <yehudasa> elder: not sure, sjust?
