[0:06] <joshd> jeffp: you probably wouldn't want to do it on every write, just when you open the device (assuming all clients follow the same protocol)
[0:08] <jeffp> joshd: the case i'm thinking of is this: open rbd device on computer a, do some stuff, computer a becomes unreachable, want to open rbd device on computer b but not sure if computer a is failed or just slow and if computers a and b are concurrently modifying the device it will become corrupted
[0:08] * The_Bishop (~bishop@cable-86-56-102-91.cust.telecolumbus.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 480 seconds)
[0:09] <jeffp> so computer a writing to the device has to be somehow disallowed
[0:09] <jeffp> my actual use case for rbd here is to hold a filesystem with a small number of immutable files and a single append only file, so i think i'll be better off with a fuse fs which stores all the metadata in a single rados object
[0:10] <jeffp> then i only have to synchronize on the metadata object and the last page of the append only file
[0:11] <joshd> yeah, that sounds like a good use case for raw rados

[8:28] <renzhi> After using ceph-authtool to create a keyring file, and then generate a key, then I do:
[8:28] <renzhi> ceph auth add mds.b --in-file=keyring.bin.mds.b
[8:28] <renzhi> but I always the error:
[8:28] <renzhi> key for mds.b not found in provided keyring
[8:29] <renzhi> what is the problem?
[8:32] <renzhi> I think I know what is the problem....

[9:08] <renzhi> ok, so I tried to add an mds to a node that's already running ods and mon. But when I try to start mds, I always get the error:
[9:08] <renzhi> 2012-05-05 15:04:05.308904 7f6d3f796780 -1 global_init_daemonize: BUG: there are 1 child threads already started that will now die!
[9:09] <renzhi> And on that specific node, I now can only start one service. If I shutdown all of them, I can start either one, ods, mds, or mon. But not more than one.
[9:09] <renzhi> I was able to run ods and mon before, but not now.
[9:10] <renzhi> The only thing change in ceph.conf is the new: [mds.b] host = test2
[9:10] <renzhi> test2 being the host name
