[2:30] <upgrayedd> does ceph try to manage data locality?
[2:31] * perplexed_ (~ncampbell@216.113.168.141) Quit (Read error: Operation timed out)
[2:34] <gregaf> upgrayedd: manage data locality how?
[2:35] <gregaf> it doesn't try and do local writes or anything like that, if that's what you mean
[2:35] <gregaf> data placements are calculated
[2:35] <upgrayedd> are they calculated w/r/t access patterns?
[2:35] <upgrayedd> or balanced that way?
[2:35] <gregaf> ah, nope
[2:36] * adjohn (~adjohn@50.56.129.169) Quit (Quit: adjohn)
[2:36] <gregaf> you can get location data out of the filesystem if you like, but it doesn't move data to readers or writers
[2:40] <upgrayedd> can i do manual placement?
[2:41] <gregaf> you can set "preferred pgs" for files and objects, and these preferred pgs are mapped onto a specific OSD (assuming it's up)
[2:42] <gregaf> but if you're doing a lot of that kind of placement then Ceph might not be the right model for you, since it can't do proper data balancing across your nodes
[2:45] * joshd (~joshd@aon.hq.newdream.net) Quit (Quit: Leaving.)
[2:49] <upgrayedd> i'm looking around for a good starting point to write a storage DRS alternative
[2:49] <upgrayedd> if there's a clusterfs that i can instrument to let me do the placement i can write a storage scheduler

[10:50] <Azrael> i keep seeing log entries like "log 2012-03-23 10:48:56.868180 mon.0 172.26.0.10:6789/0 26 : [INF] osd.1 172.26.0.31:6800/2033 failed (by osd.0 172.26.0.30:6801/1796" -- basically saying osd.0 cannot reach osd.1. if i look on osd.1, ceph-osd is no longer listening on 0.0.0.0:6801 and 0.0.0.0:6802 -- only 0.0.0.0:6800. it fixes if i restart ceph, but then usually occurs again. any idea what may cause this type of scenario/problem?

[13:43] * Ravage (~ravage@office.unitedcolo.de) has joined #ceph
[13:44] <Ravage> hi all. is there a simple setup guid on how to use ceph with iscsi?
[13:45] <Ravage> the wiki entry is not that useful to me really :(

[13:50] <NaioN> Ravage: ceph with iscsi?
[13:51] <NaioN> do you want to use the iscsi volume's as volumes for the OSDs?
[13:51] <NaioN> or do you want to export the RBD's as iscsi volumes?
[13:52] <NaioN> on which side do you want to use the iscsi?
[13:55] * foosinn (~foosinn@office.unitedcolo.de) has joined #ceph
[13:55] <Ravage> foosinn has more info :)
[13:55] <foosinn> hi everyone
[13:55] <NaioN> hello
[13:56] <foosinn> we have iscsi on both sides, but only problems on the ceth to client side
[13:56] <NaioN> how do you export?
[13:56] <foosinn> the iscsi sans are aready mounted.
[13:56] <NaioN> on the osd
[13:57] <foosinn> yes
[13:57] <NaioN> ok so you format them with the fs of choice (manual or with mkcephfs)
[13:58] <foosinn> currently it works like described in http://ceph.newdream.net/wiki/Installing_on_Debian
[13:58] <NaioN> ok
[13:58] <foosinn> wall, actualy i deleted the whole thing right now for a new startup with the 3.2 kernel ^^
[13:58] <NaioN> you use ext4?
[13:59] <NaioN> well that doesn't matter
[13:59] * LarsFronius (~LarsFroni@testing78.jimdo-server.com) Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
[13:59] <foosinn> my coworker was on the "world hosting days" fair, and someone told him to not use cephfs for stable systems
[13:59] <foosinn> it was a ext4
[14:00] * LarsFronius (~LarsFroni@testing78.jimdo-server.com) has joined #ceph
[14:00] <NaioN> well this isn't a nice setup because it uses a directory of the root fs as OSD
[14:00] <Ravage> i talked to Jude on the world hosting days yesterday and he really adviced kernel 3.2 and above. thats why we want to use it from the start :)
[14:00] <NaioN> it's nicer to mount a fs under /data/osd.$i
[14:01] <foosinn> well i mounted a new and clean ext4 fs unter /storage
[14:01] <NaioN> well the kernel matters for the local fs for the osd
[14:01] <NaioN> and for the client (mounting cephfs)
[14:01] * LarsFronius (~LarsFroni@testing78.jimdo-server.com) Quit ()
[14:01] <NaioN> so /storage is the root for the osd
[14:02] <NaioN> sorry have to go
[14:02] <NaioN> appointment
[14:02] <foosinn> ok no problem
[14:02] <Ravage> thanks for your help

[17:46] <gregaf> lxo: mds reset-journal should work, can you give us more info?
[17:47] <gregaf> jmlowe: sage usually maintains that and he's been traveling (World Hosting Days) ?????I never even remember it exists but it'll probably update this weekend or after a sprint planning session on Monday
[17:47] <gregaf> Azrael: do you have logs from the OSDs?

[17:52] <elder> gregaf, do you nkow how to satisfy the lybcrypto++8 dependency when trying to install ceph-common?
[17:52] <gregaf> umm???.probably not?
[17:52] <gregaf> not sure what you mean
[17:52] * nhorman (~nhorman@99-127-245-201.lightspeed.rlghnc.sbcglobal.net) has joined #ceph
[17:52] <elder> I'm trying to install ceph-common
[17:52] <elder> apt-get install ceph-common
[17:53] <gregaf> and it fails somehow?
[17:53] <elder> I get a number of things that it says are dependencies. One is:
[17:53] <elder> deb http://ceph.newdream.net/debian-snapshot-amd64/stable squeeze main
[17:53] <elder> deb-src http://ceph.newdream.net/debian-snapshot-amd64/stable squeeze main
[17:53] <elder> Whoops
[17:53] <elder> Package libcrypto++8 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
[17:53] <elder> (I added the above two linees to my /etc/apt/sources.list, by the way)
[17:53] <gregaf> hrm
[17:54] <Tv|work> elder: you're using old packages on a new distro
[17:54] <elder> So not squeeze? How do I get packages that match my distro?
[17:55] <Tv|work> elder: i'm assuming this is not on plana..
[17:55] <elder> It is. Is that bad?
[17:55] <Tv|work> elder: did you change apt sources.list yourself?
[17:55] <elder> Yes, but just appended to the end, on a single host.
[17:56] <Tv|work> elder: what did you add?
[17:56] <elder> The above two lines newdream.net
[17:56] <Tv|work> well, don't
[17:56] <Tv|work> elder: see /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ceph.list
[17:56] <elder> OK. How should I install ceph-common? Ahh,better!
[17:57] <Tv|work> elder: alright so by messing with the debs etc you have now tainted the plana node; please do not release the lock on it until it has been reinstalled
[17:57] <elder> I won't.
[17:58] <elder> I hesitated before changing anything, but as I understood it you had a reliable reinstall process so I thought it would be OK.
[17:58] <Tv|work> elder: and by reinstalled i really mean me or Dan has said it got reinstalled
[17:58] <Tv|work> elder: yeah we do, it's just not triggered automatically by anything yet
[17:58] <Tv|work> elder: hence, we need to keep track & make sure it happens manually, or risk breaking regression tests
[17:58] <elder> OK. Speaking of which...
[17:59] * Theuni (~Theuni@46.253.59.219) has joined #ceph
[17:59] <elder> Did I spread a lot of bad overnight?
[17:59] <Tv|work> i'd be the wrong person to ask -- i have too much on my plate without looking at the nightlies :(
[18:00] <elder> Well, I'm afraid you might notice. It's potentially REALLY bad.
[18:02] * dmick (~dmick@aon.hq.newdream.net) has joined #ceph
[18:02] <lxo> gregaf, what info would you like? it just sits there waiting, no logging, no nothing
[18:03] <joshd> elder: yeah, it looks like the nightlies installed the bad kernel on a bunch of the machines
[18:04] <gregaf> lxo: run it with logging enabled and send me the log?
[18:04] <elder> I am very, very sorry to hear that.
[18:04] <gregaf> (and ceph -s output)
[18:04] <elder> joshd, can you come up with a list of them? And others, if I can get a list of the plana machines, I can update the firmware on all of them to prevent any further damage.
[18:05] <joshd> elder: yeah, I'll send you a list
[18:05] <lxo> gregaf, err... ???no logging???, even with --debug_mds 100
[18:06] <gregaf> did you give it a location to log to?
[18:06] <elder> At this point I want the "prevent further damage" first, joshd.
[18:06] <lxo> -d should log to stdout/err
[18:06] <dmick> elder: we really need to modify the chef task to build and install firmware, apparently sooner rather than later
[18:06] <elder> Yes. If I knew how to do that I would.
[18:06] <dmick> recovering from them involves getting a console on all of them, which is just undoable
[18:07] <dmick> well, I don't know either, but I know where the source is :)
[18:07] <elder> But I do know how to do the manual update and would like to take care of that ASAP
[18:07] <dmick> the problem is getting the console
[18:08] <dmick> it may be quicker to just reinstall them :(
[18:08] <joshd> elder: killed the workers, no more kernels will be installed until they're manually restarted
[18:08] <elder> Good.
[18:09] <gregaf> lxo: pretty sure you need to add the "--log-to-stdout" option
[18:09] <gregaf> or maybe it's "--log-to-stdout=1", joshd?
[18:09] <joshd> gregaf: no, it's --log-to-stderr
[18:10] <Tv|work> oh god the logging options
[18:10] <gregaf> yeah
[18:10] <gregaf> please don't complain about them or you might make me start

[19:00] <Tv|work> dmick, elder: ceph linux-image.deb only has a Suggests: linux-firmware-image; linux-image-server (that is installed to ensure there is *some* kernel in place, whatever is appropriate at the moment) has a Depends: linux-firmware
[19:00] <Tv|work> dmick, elder: it would be easier if we could keep the deb installed; option 2 is out
[19:01] <elder> Which one was option 2?
[19:01] <elder> I'm looking at 1--the path, right?
[19:01] <Tv|work> elder: err what did i just say ;)
[19:01] <Tv|work> elder: 1. search path 2. replace deb with git checkout 3. still have deb, git checkout elsewhere, rsync on top of deb
[19:02] <elder> OK.
[19:02] <elder> There may be a path, but I'm still trying to verify it in the code.
[19:03] <elder> And I would like to implement option 3 right away while I figure out if we can do an option 1, for peace of mind.
[19:03] <elder> (I mean a one-time copy of the missing firmware file)
[19:03] <Tv|work> elder: the single file, yes
[19:03] <Tv|work> elder: but that won't survive reinstalls, hence we need something better
[19:04] <elder> Oh, yes.
[19:04] <Tv|work> what's the firmware loading thing even called? i forget
[19:05] <Tv|work> ooooh http://wiki.debian.org/Firmware says there's a search path
[19:05] <elder> You just have to have the file in the right place in /lib/firmware. The kernel will load it.
[19:05] <Tv|work> yeah i was looking for what the kernel calls to do it
[19:05] <elder> Right, I'm just trying to verify it in the code.
[19:05] <elder> request_firmware()
[19:05] <Tv|work> elder: i think we can drop our crap in /usr/local/lib/firmware
[19:05] <elder> FW_MIPS_FILE_09
[19:06] <dmick> request_firmware -> _request_firmware...
[19:06] <dmick> fw_create_instance
[19:07] <Tv|work> SUBSYSTEM=="firmware", ACTION=="add", RUN+="firmware --firmware=$env{FIRMWARE} --devpath=$env{DEVPATH}"
[19:07] <elder> ...then it gets a little fuzzy.
[19:07] <elder> So that's the uevent rule.
[19:07] <Tv|work> as in /lib/udev/firmware
[19:07] <elder> What's the helper?
[19:08] <elder> Is "firmware" the name of the program?
[19:08] <Tv|work> yes, /lib/udev/firmware

[19:12] <Tv|work> yeah
[19:12] <Tv|work> $ strings /lib/udev/firmware |grep /lib/firmware
[19:12] <Tv|work> /lib/firmware/updates/
[19:12] <Tv|work> /lib/firmware/
[19:13] <Tv|work> what's that updates thing
[19:13] <elder> If it's like /lib/modules, then updates is another place where updated versions of modules can be placed, to override what's otherwise there.
[19:13] <elder> I.e., updates supercedes.
[19:13] <Tv|work> sounds like a search path?-)\
[19:13] <Tv|work> that path does not exist on plana
[19:14] <elder> If you make it it will be used I think.
[19:14] <dmick> maybe the distro patched the source
[19:14] <dmick> don't see any "update the search path" operation in the code
[19:15] <Tv|work> yeah and udev tends to change a lot, so this is 173-0ubuntu4
[19:15] <Tv|work> on plana, you can run "apt-get source udev" to get the matching source
[19:16] <dmick> yeah, doing that on my desktop, pretty close, running build to see what patches
[19:16] <Tv|work> it looks quite different from master
[19:17] * Kioob (~kioob@luuna.daevel.fr) Quit (Quit: Leaving.)
[19:17] <elder> OK, well I don't know how to cause this to happen when a plana node is reinstalled, but it sounds like we just need to: mkdir /lib/firmware/updates; cp .../bnx2/bnx2-mips-09-6.2.1b.fw /.lib/firmware/updates
[19:17] <dmick> maybe we don't have any broken machines right now
[19:17] <dmick> josh's list is all live
[19:17] <elder> That's great news
[19:17] <Tv|work> i'd say put the linux-firmware.git checkout at /lib/firmware/updates
[19:17] <Tv|work> see if that works
[19:17] <dmick> let me try a mass ssh to all, see who is dead
[19:18] <joshd> the broken ntp servers finally did something good
[19:18] <Tv|work> joshd: DH ntp is busted *again*?
[19:18] <elder> Without objection I'd like to copy the right firmware file into place.
[19:18] <dmick> static const char *searchpath[] = { FIRMWARE_PATH };
[19:18] <joshd> Tv|work: yeah, looks like that's why a bunch of them failed to be nuked and unlocked

[19:20] <elder> Anyone want to volunteer to try dropping one into an updates directory?
[19:20] <elder> On a machine that doesn't have it? I can do it, but it might kill the machine.
[19:20] <Tv|work> just lock the machine you're doing it on, to avoid breaking teuthology runs

[19:21] <elder> [sic]
[19:21] <dmick> so missing machines right now (for unknown reasons) are:
[19:22] <joshd> elder: I'll unlock the ones from teuthology
[19:22] <elder> Just one
[19:22] <dmick> 9 23 32 36 37 39 58 65 67 72 74 75 79 86
[19:22] <dmick> (they are not ssh-able)
[19:23] <Tv|work> dmick: also, can you take the lead on changing ceph-qa-chef.git to do that git checkout into /lib/firmware/updates? it'll be a good for your edumacation
[19:23] <dmick> sure
[19:23] <Tv|work> dmick: ask me for anything, i just want you to touch everything i touch ;)
[19:23] <elder> Git checkout on the initial build.
[19:23] <dmick> way way way too intimate, man.
[19:23] <dmick> I'm calling HR.
[19:23] * Tv|work sneezes and touches things
[19:23] <elder> Git update at regular intervals thereafter
[19:24] <Tv|work> oh actually, good point
[19:24] <Tv|work> it'll need to be update
[19:24] <Tv|work> d
[19:24] <Tv|work> ceph-qa-chef is the wrong place
[19:24] <Tv|work> teuthology/task/kernel.py is the right one
[19:24] <Tv|work> and it can handle the "nothing in there yet" case easily
[19:25] <elder> In kernel.py: "git remote update; git pull origin +master:master"
[19:25] <Tv|work> dmick: now, teuthology has more people involved, we have a bus factor >1 there already; we could ask e.g. joshd to do that
[19:25] <dmick> yes, so all of those machines remain in some sort of distress
[19:25] <dmick> I will start opening consoles to find out what's up

[19:27] <joshd> that's the one I unlocked
[19:28] <Tv|work> elder: no point in doing it at install time, that kernel is known safe; better to do it when the kernel is being upgraded, then it gets done every time -> teuthology/task/kernel.py
[19:28] <Tv|work> i'll go talk to nhm, see if he wants a learning experience
[19:31] <Tv|work> "sounds good", said the sucker
[19:31] <lxo> gregaf, note taken, I'll look into that next time I need to reset the mds journal. I ended up having to re-format the newly-created filesystem because a reboot corrupted btrfs in one of the (not yet replicated) osds

[20:30] <alexxy> hi all!
[20:30] <alexxy> is there any plans on ceph over rdma devices?
[20:30] <Tv|work> elder: compile on 11.10 to use on 11.10
[20:31] <elder> I haven't compiled anything.
[20:31] <Tv|work> elder: well where did that ceph-common come from
[20:32] <elder> I'm just trying to pull it in using apt-get install
[20:32] <Tv|work> elder: remember you were futzing with squeeze; squeeze debs aren't useful on ubuntu 11.10
[20:32] <Tv|work> elder: you were messing with the sources.list
[20:33] <elder> I deleted it, then updated. Is that not sufficient? Does it never forget something I once had in there?
[20:33] <Tv|work> elder: did you get some debs already installed, from squeeze....
[20:33] <elder> I don't believe so, but I suppose it's possible. Can I ask deb or apt or something to tell me that, or give me clues?
[20:34] <Tv|work> elder: how about you purge all the ceph* debs
[20:34] <elder> apt-get purge ceph\*?
[20:35] <elder> Is that right (drop the ?)?
[20:36] <gregaf> alexxy: not right now; care to write it? :)
[20:37] <alexxy> well it may be intresting (if it will works ceph can became replacement for lustre on clusters)
[20:38] <gregaf> IPoIB isn't perfect but apparently works pretty well for this
[20:39] <gregaf> and it's not impossible; the messaging system is reasonably well isolated from other things
[20:39] <gregaf> but we don't have time or equipment to do it internally right now
[20:40] <jmlowe> alexxy: you find that your network stack latency is significant compared to your disk latency?
[20:41] <alexxy> well in some cases it may be
[20:41] * snaggletrout (~ken.frank@aon.hq.newdream.net) has left #ceph
[20:41] <alexxy> example: you have 20 24disks jbods
[20:42] <alexxy> action as OST in lustre terminology
[20:42] <alexxy> each jbod can give you about 2.5G/s rw bandwidth
[20:43] * verwilst (~verwilst@dD5769628.access.telenet.be) Quit (Quit: Ex-Chat)
[20:43] <alexxy> if you have large enough cluster of client nodes (like it is in hpc cluster env) lets say 3k client nodes then netwok will be bottleneck
[20:46] <gregaf> yeah, but the main advantage of IB compared to high-speed IP is the lower latency *shrug*
[20:46] <gregaf> (at least, so I hear)
[20:47] <jmlowe> rdma won't fix your bandwidth problems it only fixes latency, you are still much better off doing gigE to the clients and 10GigE to the oss'es
[20:47] <gregaf> and you can do that using your IB hardware
[20:47] <elder> Tv|work, "apt-get purge ^ceph" seemed to have no effect. Maybe that's not the right command.
[20:48] <gregaf> not saying that it won't ever happen, people ask about it on a pretty regular basis, but it'll be a project for once a lot more of the rest of the stack is done
[20:48] <jmlowe> and your disk controllers won't be able to supply your IB cards with their full bandwidth, so you are just waisting money
[20:49] <alexxy> jmlowe: yeah rdma dont fixes bandwidth but only latency. Also current ib hardware is QDR (40Gbps) so it has good sped and cheaper then 10G ethernet
[20:49] <jmlowe> I don't know of any hpc clusters that don't have gigE in addition to the interconnect
[20:49] <alexxy> 1G ethernet is slow =D
[20:49] <alexxy> only 120M rw bandwidth
[20:53] <jmlowe> I bought a 10Gig adaptor from HP in November for $250, last I check ib was running north of $500
[20:54] <jmlowe> switches are running about the same per port
[20:54] <jmlowe> you don't need too many ports
[20:54] * nhorman (~nhorman@99-127-245-201.lightspeed.rlghnc.sbcglobal.net) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[20:56] <alexxy> jmlowe: how about large 10G switches?
[20:56] <alexxy> most hpc motherboards already have ib hba onboard
[20:57] <jmlowe> you mean blades? I beg to differ
[20:57] <alexxy> no
[20:57] <alexxy> blades are bad idea for hpc
[20:58] <alexxy> they have big headache with ib =D
[20:58] <jmlowe> We did this at SC http://www.hpcinthecloud.com/hpccloud/2011-11-22/iu_team_sets_data_transfer_record_at_sc11.html
[20:59] <alexxy> hmm
[21:00] <jmlowe> we've been buying some idataplex, so they aren't quite blades, odds are our next 100+Tf cluster will be blade based
[21:01] <jmlowe> can't see buying a idp but you never know
[21:01] <alexxy> funny
[21:02] <jmlowe> we haven't had a response for a rfp with out blades since 2004
[21:02] <alexxy> well ibm idataplex looks better then blades
[21:03] <alexxy> also similar thing is supermicro twin^2 platforms

[21:05] <alexxy> he he

[21:08] <elder> regexp
[21:08] <elder> I used ^ceph to narrow the result down, after ceph* gave me things containing "cep"
[21:08] <Tv|work> oh it does take regexps, that's news to me
[21:11] <jmlowe> anyway aggressive caching on the client side eliminates the need for low latency networking and frees up your interconnect to do the real work which is mpi and for almost all hpc code you can't generate enough data to fill a gigE pipe with filesystem traffic so you are better off saving your money and using it to buy more spindles because going from 2 orders of magnitude difference in latency between network and disk to 3 doesn't get your an
[21:12] <jmlowe> bluegene series is the most extreme example of giving up everything for low latency message passing and skimping on processor flops and storage throughput
