[19:01] <jake> hello anyone active in here?
[19:02] <iggy> jake: usually, yeah, just depends on time of day
[19:03] <jake> i have just stumbled across the cleph project and it seems like it could be exactly what I am looking for, is there anyone who wouldn't mind answering a few questions
[19:05] <jake> *ceph* project
[19:06] * joshd (~joshd@aon.hq.newdream.net) has joined #ceph
[19:08] <iggy> jake: ask away
[19:09] <iggy> it might take a few minutes for someone to answer, but I don't think I've seen a question go unanswered in here ever
[19:10] <jake> awesome!
[19:13] <gregaf> we're about to run away to our daily standups but that won't take too long and then we'll be back…and I'm sure iggy can answer plenty :p
[19:13] * lollercaust (~paper@60.Red-83-61-249.dynamicIP.rima-tde.net) has joined #ceph
[19:14] <jake> I have been tasked with designing a highly available SAN that we can build with off-the-shelf parts. My thinking thus far is to build a server cluster consisting of several linux servers (pref centOS) with some type of distributed file system that we can present to a separate server as a single volume for mass storage...
[19:14] * chutzpah (~chutz@216.174.109.254) has joined #ceph
[19:16] <jake> the server that will be accessing the DIY SAN would be a CISCO media server, the SAN would be the storage pool for archiving all kinds of data, inc. video, audio and raw data...
[19:19] <jake> from my cursory reading of the ceph project website it looks as though something like this is exactly what ceph is target towards. If so is there any reference material on the internet that someone could point me toward that would assist me in starting down this path? If not, any suggestions are most welcome. thank you.

[19:44] <gregaf> jake: if you're building this tomorrow, Ceph's filesystem layer isn't yet production-ready
[19:45] <gregaf> but if you want to prototype it I think you should find all you need on the wiki (http://ceph.newdream.net/wiki) or the docs (preferred, http://ceph.newdream.net/docs/latest/)
[19:45] <gregaf> you might also check out (competition *shudder*) gluster
[19:46] <chutzpah> is the ceph block device TRIM-aware?
[19:48] * lollercaust (~paper@60.Red-83-61-249.dynamicIP.rima-tde.net) Quit (Quit: Leaving)
[19:48] <gregaf> chutzpah: I think not yet, but it will be once we get the time to work on rbd some more
[20:03] * aliguori (~anthony@cpe-70-123-132-139.austin.res.rr.com) Quit (Quit: Ex-Chat)
[20:06] <jake> @gregaf: thank you for the info. This would not be tomorrow but it would be soon-ish. Thank you also for you cander, i will look into gluster too. we need something production ready. I will be interested to hear when ceph is ready for this kind of deployment.
[20:07] <gregaf> it does depend on what your workload will look like; we ran a closed alpha for a while providing backup services (rsync, etc) and didn't have any trouble *shrug*

[22:42] <iggy> you think suggesting rbd+standard fs would have been a viable alternative for the guy that was asking earlier?
[22:44] <gregaf> iggy: it might have worked, but it wouldn't have been optimal — he didn't need any of the stuff that rbd is good at (except disk aggregation, and there are lots of better/simpler things for that)

[23:04] <kirby_> Hi, I'm new to ceph. I've been able to build the server package for RHEL6, but haven't had as much luck with ceph-client-standalone
[23:05] <kirby_> Does the RHEL6 kernel (2.6.32) need specific patches to build the backport standalone module?
[23:07] * joshd (~joshd@aon.hq.newdream.net) Quit (Quit: Leaving.)
[23:08] <kirby_> Incidentally, I also had problems doing a git clone, as ceph.newdream.net(66.33.208.28) gave me a connect refused for the git:// protocol
[23:16] * fronlius_ (~fronlius@f054101115.adsl.alicedsl.de) Quit (Quit: fronlius_)
[23:20] <iggy> kirby_: i think there is a backport branch
[23:23] <kirby_> I checked out master-backport, and tried to build in on RHEL6, and got this:
[23:23] <kirby_> libceph/ceph_common.c:9:28: error: keys/ceph-type.h: No such file or directory
[23:23] <kirby_> which stems from: libceph/ceph_common.c:#include <keys/ceph-type.h>
[23:24] <kirby_> I wondered if /usr/include/keys is in a later kernel/glibc -devel package, and if there was a patch or other package which supplies ceph-type.h
