[19:37] <wido> yehudasa: tnx, the librados C++ version works fine!

[19:39] <yehudasa> wido: cool!
[19:39] <wido> yehudasa: http://zooi.widodh.nl/ceph/phprados/phprados_phpinfo.png
[19:39] <wido> just to prevent users who are getting issues when they are running with different versions
[19:40] <yehudasa> yeah, had the same issue with the qemu rbd
[20:18] * NoahWatkins (~NoahWatki@soenat3.cse.ucsc.edu) has joined #ceph
[20:23] <wido> yehudasa: about RBD, this is a binary 'agreement' right now, are there any plans to develop a lib for it?
[20:24] <yehudasa> wido: agreement? you mean it's binary compatible?
[20:25] <wido> yes
[20:25] <wido> there is a directory file, etc, etc
[20:25] <wido> but creating or modifying these files still has to be done directly via librados. A bug in one of the two could cause a problem
[20:26] <yehudasa> basically it'd be easy generating a library for it, the rbd tool can be the base of such a library
[20:26] <wido> I was thinking about modifying or building a RADOS Gateway which gives access to RBD devices, so you can upload VM's just like EC2
[20:26] <yehudasa> that would be nice
[20:27] <wido> But I then we would have 3 projects
[20:27] <wido> a bug in one of them could be a problem, could corrupt images
[20:27] <wido> if everything went through librbd, that would be much safer imho
[20:27] <yehudasa> in any case rbd is built on top of librados..
[20:27] <yehudasa> even if you'll build a separate library, it'll just be a higher level code
[20:27] <wido> yes, true. But I do not need direct librados access for librbd, some actions should be shielded
[20:28] <yehudasa> there is some layers separations in the rados gateway
[20:28] <yehudasa> so you can replace the rados code with rbd code and it'll work
[20:29] <wido> but what I mean, you have to do a lot of low-level librados actions for RBD now
[20:29] <yehudasa> right
[20:29] <wido> like I said, it's a 'agreement'
[20:30] <wido> A shared library for those actions would be usefull imho. But I understand the focus is not there at the moment
[20:30] <yehudasa> at this point we don't really have a plan to create a separate library for it
[20:30] <yehudasa> but it'd make sense if we add another userspace client for it (e.g., rbd gateway like you suggested)
[20:30] <wido> Same goes for the libvirt integration btw, in libvirt you would re-implement the same could again
[20:30] <wido> could = code
[20:31] <wido> a lot of things would be handled by Qemu, but not everything
[20:31] <yehudasa> yeah, we could shift some of the qemu code to a separate library
[20:35] <wido> Ok, well, that is not my specialty. If there would be a librbd library I would probably wrap a PHP extesion around it
[20:35] <wido> And build such a "EC2 gateway" in PHP
[20:41] <yehudasa> I can open a new feature in the tracker, we'll prioritize that\
[20:42] <wido> I could open it too, just wanted to check if there were any plans
[20:43] <yehudasa> ah, ok.. opened feature #697
[20:45] <wido> tnx, i'll subscribe
[21:32] <wido> sage: could you do a pull again for phprados? URL is: http://www.widodh.nl/git/phprados.git
[21:33] <wido> tnx! I'm afk
[21:41] <bchrisman> question on mount: the mount targets a particular host/ip. I'm guessing from there, the fs client obtains information about the rest of the cluster so that mounting from one ip/host isn't a single point of failure?
[21:42] <yehudasa> bchrisman: right. Once you're mounted you'll get the info about the rest of the cluster from the monitor you've specified
[21:43] <yehudasa> you can specify multiple hosts though to mount from and if it fails with one it'll connect to another

[22:08] <Tv|work> if somebody wants to help me install that somewhere for real, that'd be great ;)
